Welcome to the US government. How can we secretly piss you off today?
I'm curious what you think the privacy case here is.
Yes, it is quite a mystery what the privacy case would be when the government implements backdoors in systems meant to provide information security (and therefore privacy).
This obviously warrants more study.

Is it the technical capacity for the FBI to observe our communications that's worrisome?
No, not at all. I think it's a fantastic application of freedom to have private conversations be listened to by the government. It's very much in the spirit of America's founders, would you not say?
I have some news for you...
No, you've no news. You may have some news for HC, though. He seems to be under the impression this **** doesn't happen.

If anything it's more difficult for them to do nowadays than it was 50 years ago, since 50 years ago they could just have the post office open letters.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Because the most paranoid security installs tend to be OpenBSD. It's supposed to be the most secure OS on the planet. Governments around the world use it, as do many organizations who value information security. OpenBSD was likely intentionally targeted for this reason.

Yes, it is exceedingly difficult for them to do that now in the digital age. It was so much easier back when they had to physically intercept letters and covertly open them.

It has always been possible and legal, in every country in the world. Are you bemoaning the fact that we may have lost the chance for it to become theoretically impossible?

It's not legal in most countries to implement backdoors to locks, digital or otherwise, so you may break in.

Would you really have the government forbidden from observing ANY private conversations?
Are you really trying to draw a parallel here to wiretapping?
I'll let you in on some clues.
1) Everyone knows you can wiretap. This they kept secret.
2) The government never disclosed this capability, and to my knowledge it has never been used in court. Do you think the government does not use backdoors they may have at all? Dream on. The naive excuse that they'd still need a search warrant is laughable, considering the reckless disregard the US government has had for personal rights over the past decade.

This is objectively false as applied to the police forces of all countries.
The police need to get explicit permissions from the courts to engage wiretaps, do they not?
This backdoor is there all the time.
Can you please link me to the court ruling specifying this is legal?

Yeah, it was. Since you know, the government runs the post office.

Yeah, it was. Since you know, the government runs the post office.
You're obviously unaware of how the internet works. It would be exceedingly trivial to intercept email to or from anyone. Ditto for IMs.
Park a car within a few hundred feet of most people's houses with wireless networking, and you can see everything.
