    • I was just googling stuff and came across this. Not relevant to anything but interesting:

Schools with the highest percentage of expenditures on athletics versus instruction:

      University of Arkansas……….56.5%
      University of Alabama………..50.2%
      University of Tulsa…………….48.1%
      University of Nebraska……….45.9%
      Texas Christian University…..43.2%
      Oklahoma University………….41.2%
      Auburn University……………..40.8%
      University of Mississippi……..35.6%
      Louisiana State University……33.8%
      Clemson University…………….33.4%

Schools with the lowest percentage of athletic expenditures versus instruction:

      Vanderbilt University…………..6.4%
      UCLA………………………………..7.1%
      University of Washington……..7.3%
      Stanford University……………..7.5%
      University of Buffalo……………7.6%
      Duke University…………………7.8%
      Temple University………………8.0%
      Rutgers University……………..8.6%
      Brigham Young University…..8.9%
      Northwestern University……..9.0%
yay Temple, I guess. But maybe that's why our teams suck ass.

      • Since they're not spending it on sports, and obviously not spending it on teaching, where is their money going?

Well it says versus instruction so it must be mostly going towards teaching

Although there has been crazy amounts of construction the past few years. Most of the buildings that were there when I was a freshman in 2003 have been demolished and new buildings constructed. That has got to be expensive. I don't know how other universities are but Temple's board of trustees love to build new buildings.

They just started a new $1.2 Billion construction project, even after building 15 new buildings since I attended.

              No.

KH, I graduated magna *** laude. Made the dean's list every semester but my sophmore year. I was pulling 4.0's on the semester (not class... semester!) my senior year with an 18-credit hour courseload and working two jobs (50-60 hours a week).

I was one of Temple's best and brightest I had a 1360 SAT score which was well well well above average compared to my peers.

Doesn't bode well for Kuci's claim that the American university system is the best in the world, does it?

              • I'm still astounded that you don't understand that there may be other categories than "sport" and "instruction".

Also, you appear to be associating "the American university system" with "Temple University".

                • Get this, KH... Intermediate Microeconomic Analysis... so upper-level undergraduate economics. I had over a 100% final course grade. I never needed the generous curves so my test scores were past 100%

                  Oh universities suck, don't they?

The ratios were sports to instruction. I assume 8% means that 8% of what is spent on instruction is spent on sports.

Moreover, you've always struck me as somebody who memorizes details without understanding what he's learned. And I'm not being snarky; you're simply not that bright.

Yes, though it appears to be 1.00 vs 0.08 rather than 0.92 vs 0.08

That still doesn't tell me how much of the university's expenditures are on instruction vs everything else.

                          • Points to remember:

                            1) Temple is not that good a school
                            2) A bachelor's degree in finance is not particularly challenging
                            3) Passing, or even doing well in undergraduate courses is not always indicative of true understanding; it depends on the course, the exams and the professor
                            4) The qualities that make a good student are not always the qualities that make for a successful career, though to some extent they overlap. Undergraduate coursework is far more structured than is "the real world"

You know, I was my best on projects and presentations. Far better at that sort of stuff than test-taking. I actually narrowly lost (bull**** judges gave me second place) a business policy competition consisting of the graduating seniors in the business school which involved a business plan to improve one of those dollar store chains. My main idea was to introduce check cashing services complete with demographic data, forecasts, etc. to support my idea, as well as some minor things like restructuring store layouts and reorganizing a bizarrely inefficient store management hierarchy. Stuff like that is what I can do. I had to learn a lot about the company by visiting stores, making calls, finding data, etc. I always excelled at that stuff and professors praised my projects as being better than the stuff their graduate students produced.

I'd probably suck at your sort of job or whatever Kuci does but I'm tall, good-looking, and have a knack for public speaking. Combine that with a modicum of intelligence and there's got to be stuff I can do in the corporate world.
