We're talking long-term, Asher. I know I can handle it physically. Darius said that he knew he couldn't hack it. He probably can't but it won't be because his body; it'll be because his spirit is weak. Given enough work, he can build his body to be able to handle it even if he takes multiple tries like myself.

No. Clearly you've never been to medical school. Or any remotely biology-related class for that matter.
Yes, you can make a muscle stronger and more endurant. Yes, you can make your cardiopulmonary system more efficient. No, you cannot will cartilage to grow where it wasn't, will a vertebrae to be 2mm posterior to where it is, will a compressed neuroma to disappear, will a hunchback to be properly aligned, will years of tar to exit your lungs, will a flat foot to be arched, will an amputated leg to regenerate, will a fracture to fuse, will a C3-severed spinal cord to transmit messages from your penis, etc. etc. etc. Quit being deliberately obtuse.Last edited by Darius871; November 15, 2010, 00:20.

Alby seems to have some romantic vision of the marines, which is combined with an amazing display of tunnel vision...

You need to have a backup plan.
Dude, if worse comes to worse just join the Dallas Police Department. I'm not joking either. The force is always understaffed since they're constantly firing cops for corruption, and their physical fitness requirements are a joke. IIRC, you have to run a mile in 18 minutes to join and they don't even make you do standard pushups. They actually allow candidates to lock their knees to the ground! It probably pays just as well as the military without being as dangerous I imagine.
And considering how old and out of shape most DPD officers are, I'm sure they'd jump right on the prospect of hiring someone who is young, in good physical condition, with a bachelors degree.
I'm not kidding. If you promise not to tell weird stories and ask for advice, I would even let you stay at my place while you go to their orientations/testing. All of the surrounding police departments hold their hiring rounds around the same 2 week period during the fall and later in the spring.
I know how it can feel to be unemployed for a long period of time.Last edited by Riesstiu IV; November 15, 2010, 00:21.

What else could it have meant? Yes, there were several, but I had no intention of disclosing them and it wasn't until attempting a pre-enlistment workout regimen that I knew for sure that it would have been a no-go with or without a waiver.
In any event, just because what's wrong with you isn't a diagnosed medical condition specifically listed in voluminous disqualification regulations, that doesn't mean the body fate gave you doesn't have limitations well below what the Marines demand. If merely running from point A to point B a number of times breaks your bones, something's not quite right, whether it's diagnosed or not.

Darius, I don't think you appreciate the volume of running done in military training or the effect that running with combat boots on concrete can have (or doing suicides in boots on a basketball court for that matter). And not just mere running in boots but running in gear with a rifle or doing ammo can sprints with a 30lb ammo can in each hand or fireman carries with 180lb man on your back... or how the marches with the ILBE packs can quickly turn into sprints... or the specific incident before my shins got real bad in which we were sprinting across the concrete parade deck holding our packs out in front of us.
Combine all that with insufficient rest and recovery and you have a recipe for broken bones.
I really don't think you appreciate just how tough it is on your body and how unsurprising my injuries are. Consider, I have no track, cross-country, or even school sports experience so I was never someone who had routinely clocked in significant weekly mileages for years. But even guys who had plenty of experience STILL had injuries."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Working as a Dallas cop would surely suck but on the up side, there are opportunities for decent cops to migrate to the suburbs after a few years on the force.
