Okay, MrFun, really? If you're not going to school, just work 2-3 jobs. With your education, they'll hire you. It'll suck but realistically, you can work 16 hours a day and still get enough sleep.
If it helps, when I was going to school, I worked two jobs. I would total 50 hours a week and had a number of 4.0 semesters and made the dean's list every semester of my college career except 2 semesters (I was actually unemployed one of those semesters so go figure!). Honestly, because of it, I scoff at the idea that it's too hard to go to school and work full-time.
Don't be weak, MrFun. You can do it. And if you're not in school, you have even more time and ability to work multiple jobs.
Hell, the less time you're in the house and more time working, the less your utilities will cost cause you'll never be in the house except to sleep!"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

Honestly, I'm wondering really how hard can it be... let's break down expenses...
MrFun, how much is your monthly rent? Average utilities? Car insurance? Student loan payments? Let's figure out how much money you really need and ways you can get that."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

I have done something like what you've described before. I worked in retail part-time, while teaching community college part-time, while working on my thesis.
Much more recently, I worked full-time, while going to school full-time, taking three online non-credit graduate courses. The only reason I was able to take those Library Science courses, is because the Papers of Abraham Lincoln job benefits included full tuition waiver.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

Mr.Fun, if you're seriously considering living in a monastery or being homeless, then who cares if it's not much of a life to live working two jobs? Your options sound worse than working two jobs. No one says you have to do it the rest of your life but to get over your present financial hurdles, it's worth it. Really, I wouldn't be surprised if after 6 months, you manage enough saved up for you to pursue other options.
Minimum wage in Illinois is $8.25. Now, you have a college education so you can probably get a much better paying job and would start off at even the most menial jobs as at least a supervisor. McDonald's managers were making $10/hr back when the minimum wage was in PA was $5.15. I'm sure they're making $11-12/hr now.
You can get 40 hours as a supervisor at a 7-11 or Rite Aid or McDonalds or whatever. You'll be pulling in at least $400 a week pre-tax with that job. Throw in 20 more hours a week at $8.25 and you add another $165 pre-tax a week. You could easily make $2000/month after tax.
And honestly, if it really came down to it, you could probably trim some of your expenses a bit. If you work a lot, you'll use less utilities, you can eat at the job if you work in food service, etc.
I went years eating pretty much nothing but the food at my job, canned meats, and peanut butter. I would go to the supermarket and figure out the best bargain in terms of cents per calorie. I actually didn't have to but I spent all my money on a stupid *****."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

I had considered moving to a monastery. The life of self sufficient labour and scholarly reflection had a great appeal. My dream was dashed when it was pointed out that I would probably not be allowed to keep my widescreen and xboxSafer worlds through superior firepower

I find it hilarious that MrFun's reservation about a monastery is that he won't be able to have glorious man on man butt sex!"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

nearly $2000 a month to live?! there are certainly some savings to be made there. i'm sure there's lots of stuff that you're spending on that you don't need. it's a question of whether you want to keep your current lifestyle, in which case you'll probably have to work the two jobs to pay for it, or you want reduce your living expenses and work for a reasonable amount of time each week. given what you've posted here recently, i think working would be a very good thing, but you don't want to burn yourself out working 60/70 hours a week."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Just paint your skin black and live in the ghetto for a couple of years until you get back on your feet. I did that with a friend of mine.
