Do you have any office skills? Are there any temp agencies in the city in which you are living? Those tend to pay better than minimum wage.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I have looked for office positions, DanS. Many of them require minimum one or two years of experience.
I also applied for several Illinois state jobs in office positions but then when I went to a local center to take the required exam, I got a grade "B" and the exam giver said that I should wait a month, then retake it to try to get it up to an "A" because getting a position that I applied for with "B" is much less likely.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

No temp agencies? That's how I survived on my own for a few years.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. Can't you live in a cheaper place?
Here (Argentina) students from the countryside and provinces don't live in a College Campus (they just don't exist here) what they do is live in rooms that families rent, often those rooms have wi fi, cable tv, sometimes private bathroom, and the people in the house share the kitchen.
My mother who now lives alone, gets a quite interesting income from the students who now live in the ex rooms of me and my siblings
Something like that should be cheaper than an apartmentI need a foot massage

Barnabas: Mrfun seems to be kind of anti-social or he has wild sex parties. Either case, he already said he's uncomfortable living with strangers."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

I e-mailed my friends and family pretty much the same thing I wrote in my OP here. One of those people is a pastor at the local Metropolitan Community Church here in Springfield, Illinois. He personally has come to know me and said he would see about contacting a couple of people who might be open to letting me board at their place for free until I get my next job or figure what I will do next.A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

THats what I don't quite get--it doesn't have to be a complete stranger. Usually people know people that they get along with well and who like the idea of sharing expenses. If finances are limited , sharing is ALWAYS an option.
That said , you seem adamant not to share a place, so I guess its not under consideration.
One other thing confused me-- didn't I read somewhere that you had a few thousand in the bank. I would start dipping into that before I would go to a homeless shelter or take up "monkhood". But I understand your reluctance if it would only mean you are in the same position in 3 months time-- What you need to do is change the equation somehow
The biggest problem seems to be no job-- Are you applying regularly for stuff? How many jobs did you apply for today ? Because my experience has always been that if you are persistent enough , you find something and having a job, no matter what, is one of the best ways to have a better shot at a better job. Unemployed for a long while looks "lazy" while the person that does retail or fast food or whatnot looks like they are willing to "do what it takes to get ahead"-- LOts of employers like seeing that history where people held a job for a whileYou don't get to 300 losses without being a pretty exceptional goaltender.-- Ben Kenobi speaking of Roberto Luongo

I agree with David Floyd. I am inexperienced I admitbut his suggestions make the most sense to me. Two jobs won't kill you. You can make it if you try. Loads of people do.
Just be grateful we don't live in France and there are no laws against working hardIf there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
