      HC:

      Check out your home state:

Right now in Virginia, approximately 300,000 people with past felony convictions who have finished their sentences — meaning they are not in prison and are not on probation or parole — are barred from voting for life because they have past felony convictions. Only one other state (Kentucky) has such a punitive disfranchisement policy; all other states have apparently realized that barring so many people from voting is just plain un-American.

Among these 300,000 disfranchised Virginians are people like Frank Anderson, whose story was reported recently in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Anderson volunteered for Gov. Kaine's gubernatorial campaign, but when he applied for the restoration of his voting rights, his application was denied because he had several speeding tickets. You see, to get your voting rights back in Virginia, you have to submit an individual application to the governor and can have "no convictions for violations of the law." Apparently, "this includes moving violations, such as speeding." If we kept everyone with a speeding ticket from voting, our voting booths would be perpetually empty.
Virginia's disfranchisement law is a holdover from the Jim Crow era. At the 1901-02 Virginia Constitutional Convention (where felony disfranchisement laws were debated), one delegate explained: "This plan will eliminate the darkey as a political factor in this State in less than 5 years, so that in no single county…will there be the least concern felt for the complete supremacy of the white race in the affairs of government."

I'm hoping he overlooked that and doesn't completely reject the concept of rehabilitation.

Perhaps they should have thought about this before they broke the law.

You want to know what I think, Albert? I think you are a disappointment to your race. I'd be embarassed if I saw someone making excuses for white folks.

Do the crime, suffer the loss of your civil liberties. There's no excuse for it, Albert. Everyone has a choice. If you grew up in a bad neighbourhood, and you choose to commit a crime, you should expect to be punished for it.

Whining about how it is unfair, I don't have much sympathy. What makes you so special that you believe the rules do not apply to you?

With regards to Frank Anderson, mentioned as an example above, he had a 1999 burglary conviction but since then, is studying public administration at George Mason University and worked for Tim Kaine's gubernatorial campaign. When he applied to have his rights restored, his speeding violations derailed him...

He has about a dozen moving violations during the past five years while driving thousands of miles a week as a courier, he said. None of the traffic infractions was for drunken or reckless driving, which are misdemeanors, he added.
            now granted...

Hickey noted that Kaine (4,296) and his predecessor, Mark Warner (3,486), have restored far more voting rights to felons than any of their predecessors. (Jim Gilmore restored 238.) Still, 300,000 felons remain disenfranchised in Virginia
So it happens although as Governor Gilmore shows, it's hardly a sure thing and it requires a lot of legwork on the part of the applicant and the decision comes down to the Governor's office.

But note this is just Virginia. There are 10 other states where you are permanently disenfranchised even with a clean record since the felony conviction.

              Okay. 1, I'm white.

2, you're a dumbass. Yes, people have a choice and should be held accountable for their decisions...

but that does not mean that someone who was a hotheaded immature dumbass at 18 and robbed someone, served his time, is rehabilitated, and hell, is going to college and worked on a political campaign like that guy I mentioned in VA, should be barred from voting for LIFE!

              Jesus forgives. Why can't you?

Check out some of the laws...

                Mississippi:

To regain the ability to vote, an individual, after completion of his/her sentence, must go to his/her state representative and convince them to personally author a bill reenfranchising that individual. Both houses of the legislature must then pass the bill. Re-enfranchisement can also be granted directly by the governor.
Good luck with that one in Mississippi!

Then why is race at all relevant? Do the crime, do the time. Simple as this.

Ahh, this is about Al Greene.

So you care about this now, because there is a Dumbocrat nominee for Senator of South Carolina with a criminal record running against DeMint?

Personally, I think a felony conviction should disqualify you from higher office.

I'm also split on whether public employees should be permitted to have criminal records either.

You are right that rehabilitation is an important goal of the prison system, but it isn't the only goal. What about restitution?

Generally speaking, looks like in most states, it takes 2-5 years after the completion of the sentence to be able to apply for re-enfrachisment. Any violations, even speeding tickets, can end someone's application and in states like Mississippi, as you can see, it requires a lot of legwork on the part of the applicant as well as the hope that the governor's office or the state representative would deem the applicant worthy to have his rights restored.

Personally, I think a prior criminal record should disqualify you from higher office.

I'm also split on whether public employees should be permitted to have criminal records either.

                      What?

I'm a ****ing Republican, dumbass. I think that Al Greene guy in S. Carolina is a dumbass and I put up a thread about him that was basically haha point and laugh at the stupid Democrats who voted for this idiot.

And we're not talking about holding office. We're talking about the simple right to vote!

Do the crime... do the time... you idiot. They ****ing did the time! And waited 5 years to be eligible for re-enfranchisement and still can't vote!

Fair enough. That is the decision that those states have chosen to make. Other states do things differently.

And maybe i need to re-iterate this...

These laws were created with racist intent... similar to how the first pro-abortionists were supporting abortion because they hoped they could legally exterminate the Blacks that way. Check out Margaret Sanger's views on race and eugenics.

                            So, don't commit a felony.

                            Let's see.

Don't commit aggravated assault and battery.
                            Don't commit arson
                            Don't commit burglary/robbery/break and enters
                            Don't sell drugs
                            Don't steal a car
                            Don't kill someone
                            Don't rape someone.

I don't think that's particularly difficult for the average 18 year old to avoid doing any of these.
