I don't think anyone disputes that.

I think Lucas does; he keeps throwing "entertainment" based on them at us.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

              Well, let's compare:

              Plot
              Star Wars Prequels: Idiotic
              Avatar: Idiotic
              Verdict: TIE

              Characters
              SWP: Cardboard, frequently annoying
AV: Cardboard, generally too boring to be annoying
              Verdict: Depends on tastes

              Stereotypes
SWP: Degrading ethnic caricatures recycled as aliens
AV: Ridiculous noble-savage Native American caricatures recycled as aliens
              Verdict: Depends on tastes

              Preachiness
              SWP: Minimal
              AV: Enormous
              Verdict: SWP wins

              Eye Candy
              SWP: Pretty
              AV: Extremely Pretty
              Verdict: AV wins

              Action Scenes
              SWP: Decent, not really breathtaking
              AV: Utter crap
              Verdict: SWP wins

              Pre-Release Hype
              SWP: Absolutely mind-boggling
              AV: Merely gigantic
              Verdict: AV wins

So, assuming you weigh them all evenly (which is, of course, a big assumption), it's a matter of whether you value action scenes and less whining over somewhat reduced overhyping and prettier pictures. And your personal preferences about racism and lame characters, of course.

Pre-release hype? I think Avatar gets the nod there. Months before it came out you had people saying it was going to change filmmaking forever and that it wasn't just an amazing movie it was historic. No one said anything remotely like that for the Star Wars movies.

                      This.

Plus Episode 3 was actually decent.

Star wars would actually make a decent tetrology. 3-6.

Hey, I'm voting with the majority in the poll. The people have spoken, Avatar sucks more than the prequels. Don't take it out on me.

Not that. Your idea that Avatar was more hyped than SW Ep 1.

Episode I was incredibly highly anticipated, certainly. But no one suggested it would make history and no one was talking Oscar before it was released. People figured it'd be a good popcorn movie in the mold of the original Star Wars and got a bad popcorn movie.

Avatar was hyped to be nothing we've ever seen before, and historic, etc. Somehow this hype carried it to some truly undeserved Oscar nominations.

I never got dragged to any of the SWP well after release because "Everyone says it's good movie" and then wait three hours for the first available showtime.

When I watched it all of the subtitles were in Korean only This greatly increased my cinematic experience since I could get the jist of what people were saying but I didn't have to wallow in the idiocy of the script.

Fun movie if they just stopped talking, worth watching in a theater since the eye-candy is well done and looks a lot more real than most CGI-fests. But not one single memorable line in the entire movie.
