Officer programs have been tough to get into the last few years. Even with the war, they're exceeded recruiting goals (surprised about the Army being packed though).

Have you tried the Marine Corps, by the way? There's fewer slots but it seems like Law contracts are the main ones getting in now (Air contracts are a no go for a while).

Um, the marine corps doesn't have a JAG corps.

EDIT: looked it up again and I'm not sure--I read a while back that they use the navy's JAGs. But wiki doesn't seem to be clear about this.

        1) You have no knowledge about what you're talking about
        2) Considering the above, why don't you just assume I know what I'm talking about?
        3) Why don't you do the above because I've been applying to OCS since 2008 and I've been to two OCS classes so far and I've mentioned this in threads that you have posted in although I don't know if you actually read my posts
        4) Shut the hell up when grown folks are speaking.

Have you seen "A Few Good Men", HC? You know, the movie where Jack Nicholson is all like "You can't handle the truth!" What was Kevin Bacon in that movie?

I'm sorry. I'm being rude and not acting appropriately to a child. I'm sorry. You don't know better and I'm expecting you to. Honestly, your smugness and ego are just irritating me. I'll try to not let it bother me again and treat you appropriate to your age.

Trends suggest that not only is HC smarter than you are, he will also end up as less of a tool. Right now you guys are about even.

                  a. No.
                  b. WTF does that have to do with this?

                  d. The "I am older than you and you are a child" line does not work on the internet, and especially not for you. It's not a valid counterpoint, it's not particularly insulting, and it has little to no effect on my credibility.
                  e. Putting aside the fact that I am often incorrect and know this, I actually corrected my post in an edit. I think I was conflating medics with JAGs. The marine corps does not have its own medics if I recall correctly.
                  f. Why should I automatically assume anyone on the internet knows what they are talking about?
                  h. I suspect that if I had never explicitly mentioned that I was in high school, no one (except for Kuciwalker) would have caught on to the fact that I am not an adult.

                    Anyone else reading this?

It's alright, HC. The reason why I mentioned "A Few Good Men" is because Kevin Bacon plays a Marine Corps JAG officer in that movie. He's the prosecution.

And yes, the Marine Corps has JAG. You are correct in that the USMC does not have a medical establishment. There are no Marine doctors or Marine medics. The Corps uses Navy personnel. The 'medics' are called Corpsmen and often wear Marine MARPAT uniforms into combat but with "US Navy" tapes. Corpsmen are Navy but often serve in Marine Corps units.

The Marine Corps has its own lawyers though.

While likely true, this reflects more on other posters than yourself.

JAG may be tough to get into, but at least as far as I've heard from a recruiter ordinary OCS should be a virtual lock with a law degree, clean criminal record, and work experience. That's essentially my default plan depending on what comes up.

From what I've heard and briefly read months ago - and please correct me if I'm wrong on this - the Marines are different in not having a distinct "JAG Corps" per se and instead route some line officers to Judge Advocate functions after OCS, meaning they don't do advance offers to civilian students and generally expect a civilian to already have a completed JD in-hand before applying. If that's accurate, then now would be the first week I've been eligible in theory, and after the July 27-28 bar is the first week I'd be actually free to take the jump. Supposedly the risk is that if you for some reason don't make it through NJS (or god forbid your bar results come back bad, which you wouldn't know until a few months in), you're contractually on the hook to be a line officer in some non-legal specialty. This wouldn't necessarily be such a bad thing, but the uncertainty is still a downside.
                        Unbelievable!

Ordinary OCS as in a non-Law contract? I'm sorry I'm not familiar with how the Army does things. For the Marine Corps, everyone goes to the same OCS but you have Ground contracts, Air contracts, Law contracts, and Reserve contracts (which can also be Ground, Air, and Law, although I've never seen an Air Reserve). I suppose a lawyer could want to do logistics or something unrelated to law and go as a ground contract, but I've never seen it happen.

Is that what you mean? Like being a Ground contract, despite your law degree and not practicing law in the military?

And OCS shouldn't be a 'lock' just off of that. Well if you're talking the Army, maybe

Here are some things you'll have to clear... medically qualified? arrest history, including traffic violations? drug use? tattoos? I'm sure you're an upstanding man, just be aware that there a number of things that could slow the process and require waivers.

meaning they don't do advance offers to civilian students and expect a civilian to already have a completed JD in-hand before applying.
No. You can be attending law school and do PLC-Law in the summers with a law contract. So no expectation of a JD.
You can also sign up with a law contract before passing the bar I believe although the problem is, and I think you alluded to it, if by some chance you fail, I think I heard you void your law contract and revert to general ground (ie- they don't let you take it multiple times). So it's best to have passed the bar before going to OCS. All the Law contracts I've known have passed the bar before going.
