you are reading my comparison in completely the wrong way. my point has to do with the term 'friendly relations' and its very ambiguous meaning.

anyway, it's late and i'm going to bed. maybe tomorrow, we'll continue this.

I understand your point, I just don't understand how you think any nation on Earth could have friendly relations with the Stalinist Soviet Union, post-WW2, except in a "buckle under" type scenario.

The guy was a textbook case - a literal textbook case - of paranoid schizophrenia. Friendly relations just won't happen. Getting a recent rape victim to trust you is more likely.

Somehow, Drake managed to pinpoint the most fitting answer on the first reply of the thread

Rest of the thread is amusing, telling more about the posters (example: OK, so BK has never heard of Henry Wallace and thinks Carter's VP is the "most liberal" candidate his ultra-robocon character has to naturally oppose) than the historical figures involved in the conversation.

I like Stalin. He is straightforward, knows what he wants and will compromise when he can't get it.

Another good point is that he's dead.

              VJ,

Yes, and Neville Chamberlain also liked Hitler. In 1938. Wonder what he thought a year later?

My point is that, Truman was a lot less likely to bow down to Stalin than FDR was. I simply cannot see Truman simply writing off Central Europe (Czechoslovakia, Eastern Germany, Austria) to the Soviets. I could be wrong but I don't see it. Either way, does anyone actually think that Wallace wouldn't have let Stalin have all of Berlin, had he demanded it? Hell, I honestly think Wallace would have given up all of Germany, and let Stalin impose his will in the Balkans (Greece) had Stalin pushed the issue with a hypothetical President Wallace.

Yes, you are likely right. Henry Wallace as POTUS could easily have led to no Cold War.

Why you think that's a good thing is beyond me. Unless, of course, you are in favor of Stalinism.

Dan Quayle was just ignorant but good intentioned while Cheney was actively evil.

                        This is a tired meme.

Look, I know Harry Wallace was FDR's VP. I'm quite aware of why he's on the list. I personally think Mondale was worse.

Hence the comment, "you favour evil over stupidity".

To be fair, it's hard to imagine Greece being any worse off had it gone through a Stalinsit period than it is in the real world. It's not like that type of government - or any other - could make the Greeks any more lazy and useless.

                              Aaron Burr was the man

At the very least if it wasn't for him impeachment of judges would become far more of a commonplace thing to settle political odds (which the Jeffersonians were very interested in doing, by impeaching Federalist judges because they disagreed with them on policy). Burr made it clear that it was far more than just a simple law, but a big deal to impeach a judge. Probably saved the Republic from that menace.
