I'm no genius, but this crisis has moved more quickly than I expected. The EMU's milquetoast response to the crisis hasn't done them any good. That said, stopping the flight of capital from Greece is probably not that expensive -- the US has led far larger efforts in the past on a few occasions, such as for Mexico and South Korea. That is, it won't be too expensive if Greece can be made to live more or less within its means.
A first-world Euro-denominated sovereign credit available at 11.3% p.a. sure is tempting.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Greece should sell a few islands.
I know rich Libertarian nerds would come up with lots of money for their own state no matter how tiny or crappy. Also Turkey maybe wants an island or two, perhaps Italy as well.Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.

What's this I hear about it being unconstitutional for Germany to contribute to the Greek bailout fund?Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Not sure what this is referring too, but it's probably generally about debt. They were additions made to the constitution lately that make it imperative for govs to reduce debt over a certain amount of time (no idea about the correct english term for this). Similar stuff was agreed EU-wide before, but with the financial crisis, bank bailout etc. everyone is going into much more debt, and this new problem will make matters worse.
I doubt this will finally stop help for Greece, since noone in the euro-zone can afford EU members to go bankrupt.Blah

The BBC quoted several German lawyers claiming that the German constitution had a "no bailout" provision and the quoted people said it was extremely likely the high court would rule any German participation in the Greek bailout illegal. Was the guy talking out of his butt or is there actually such a provision in the German constitution?
Also I understand the Greeks are dead set against any cuts what so ever and instead simply want EU members to keep giving them money for nothing forever. Is there a way to kick Greece out of the EMU if they don't act responsibly or was the UK smart to stay out of the Euro?Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Afaik, there's such a no-bailout rule in the Lisbon-treaty of the EU. So the EU commision or EU member states could bring the issue about Greece to the European Court of Justice. I'm not a lawyer, so I may have some of the legal stuff wrong, but my impression is that this is not a *must* however, so if noone objects there will be no case.Blah

there has been talk of greece exiting the euro on a temporary basis. this would be in order to let allow a new drachma to depreciate against other currencies, which should allow greek exports to become more competitive and help keep unemployment down. however, i think that any 'temporary' exit from the euro will quickly turn into a permanent one.
the greeks will still have to make serious cuts and as we have seen, this will not down well with the greek people. especially when combined with higher prices for imports."The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.
