Actually it's the people that own them that aren't showing any self-restraint.

I'm on the golf course enjoying a peaceful morning with the guys, but as we come up to the group of Japanese guys in front of us waiting on the tee they'll all staring at their crackberries. What's the point of relaxing on the golf course if you're checking your damn email. They are the slaves. Those that don't check are the masters.

Well, when you wish to tell the time you can easily reveal a tasteful chunk of crystal glass, gold and beautifully-engineered Swiss mechanics with a flourish. Or you can stare at your phone like a dork.

It's just a question of class and style.

I get far more comments about whipping out a Nexus One to check the time than any man with a watch.

Mastery of one's life is a relative thing.

While I admire rah's ability to live (mostly) disconnected, these days it's certainly the exception. I'm pretty connected (~90% of waking hours), but it's mostly for business reasons. With a cellular, a laptop and a 3G network, I can be in my office whenever and wherever I choose. And know the time without wearing jewelry.

It's really not too difficult to turn off the ringer.

You can also screen calls...

On my Nexus One I even wrote an app myself to automatically look up an overlay the name & address of unknown callers so I can screen people not in my contact book. It helps that I've direct access to all of Canada's phone directory DBs, though.

Again you still have to look at your phone. I don't.

Right now I'm wearing a Chinese fake Rolex that I fixed last night, to verify its proper operation. My regular watch looks like this, but with a lighter dial. I don't carry a cell phone, telephones are completely ridiculous.
