22 million people watched overtime goal

Nearly two-thirds of Canada saw Sidney Crosby score Canada's game-winning goal in Sunday's Olympic gold-medal hockey game, according to CTV.

CTV announced today that 22 million Canadians tuned into game during overtime, a huge marker that broke the previous Canadian ratings record set by the opening ceremonies. The network also said in a release that an average audience of 16.6 million people tuned into the game, which was also a record for average audience. The game also scored an 85 share, meaning 85 per cent of the people watching TV in Canada were tuned into the game.

The closing ceremonies that followed the game also drew a huge crowd with an average audience of 14.3 million viewers. Since the Vancouver Olympics began, CTV continually scored huge numbers.

By any measure, the Olympics was a huge event, both culturally and for television.

Roughly 17,000 were in the building, but tens of millions will say they were there, sort of like Woodstock, after the fact. In the morning, with block-long lineups to local pubs at 9 a.m., gold medal tickets were fetching $10,000 and more. Today those scalper victims will insist it was good value, and who’s to argue.

It was sort of peculiar. I've read that there were line ups at bars across the country. Many people wanted to be in a crowd to watch the game.

DirectTV is feuding with Comcast, or the other way, or both.

Comcast owns Vs. DTV dropped Vs when their last contract ran out. Each side is pointing at the other. I assume it will get ironed out. Comcast/Vs will be leaned on by the league, and DTV will be losing subscribers in markets where hockey matters.
