That's the main failing in the iPad. All of the other devices that became popular did so because they made something practical that was not before. The iPod put an unprecedented number of songs in your pocket in a convenient way, the iPhone was the first REAL smartphone for non-business people.

      The iPad is...?
Awkward, heavy, slippery, expensive, pointless, etc...

          • What kind of ****ing cretin thinks it reasonable to call something built in 2010 that has no multitasking a computer?

            • Fine. What kind of ****ing cretin builds a computer with no USB ports and no multitasking ability? Substitute whatever term you think is more accurate.

              • The HP Slate looks like a far more capable device than the iPad:

                • The screen is really nice, although too glossy. The keyboard is just a little too small, but I am sure you could get used to it. Definitely better for reading than a phone.

Also slightly too heavy for comfort.

Posted from the Apple store on an IPad.

                  • I've never understood the gloss screen. I've got a matte screen on my MBP and love it. Then again, I work next to a window all day.

                      • Shiny. So shiny.

Reflections were not that bad actually. The screen is bright enough to overwhelm most of them.

Another slight negative: Ipod aps look pretty lousy when scaled up.

Upside, links are much easier to hit.

                        • Asher, what do you think about ICD's Gemini? On paper it's better than iPad in all respects.

I love the screen protector on my Fujitsu tablet. Not glossy at all. A pleasure to write on and doesn't have a fingerprint in over a year of use. I knew someone who bought a HP tablet with a glossy screen and no screen protector. The first day it was covered with smudges.

                            • That Live Science link is also right about one other thing: the iPad is too slippery. Glass on the front and aluminum on the back. Once you get its weight moving it could easily slip out of your hand.

Apple should put a rubberized strip along the back edge.

                              • Apple is up to its usual tricks, trying to force all of the non-Apple eBook reading apps on the iPad to suck more than Apple's unfairly:
