7.0 Magnitude earthquake hits Haiti

How common are earthquakes in Caribbean area? Because I cannot remember when was the last time it hit that region.

There's actually a fair about of tectonic fault lines in the area which means earthquakes on the plate edges and volcanoes on the eastern side where there is an active subduction zone. Oh, and technically most of Central America is on the Caribbean plate as well so there is a second subduction zone where the Cocos plate is subducting below Central American causing volcanoes and earthquakes there as well.

And the only hospital in town collapsed... Ouch.

Actually there are several hospitals, and three are reported as collapsed or being severely damaged.

Still no word about my friend's mom, but I haven't talked to him since last night. Doctors Without Borders isn't reporting any missing people/casualties of their own yet, so that's a hopeful sign. I imagine she is OK just incredibly busy, given the circumstances, and does not have easy communication means. We don't even know what part of the country she was in, so she may not be near Port-au-Prince.

The Haitian PM was on CNN this morning and said he expected the death toll would be over 100,000 people.

I just read that uberprick Rush Limbaugh said what one could only expect of him, saying that Obama came out on this in less than 24 hours to bolster his credibility with black people, contrasting it to the 3 days before his comments on the attempted bombing of the Detroit plane.

Possibly >100,000 dead, vs. one ******* lighting his nutsack on fire and getting the **** beaten out of him by a Dutchman. Sure, that's a fair comparasion, you racist sack of ****.

Limbaugh is another dip****. Had Obama reacted more slowly, Limbaugh would have lashed out at Obama for not reacting quickly enough. But since Obama did react more quickly, Limbaugh wants to lash out at him for doing so.
