Yes sir, I agree with you. I got a lot from here but in respect to downloads, most of the time I had to got to CFC

Despite what did or not go on with Dale and a few here and the subsequent immature personal attacks on many sides, Dale did provide some much needed help for me, when he was here. Same with CFC. Locutus and many such as Hatschy and Martin helped me with CTP. as I learned some very basic tools to mod wth and gave me courage and encourgament to learn from scratch how to do scenarios. I was butting heads with limited knowledge, they stepped up.

I do hope we can all learn from those mistakes and help not hinder one another in future

Check the Great Library here, for Civ II. I'll kiss your ass and give you 20 minutes to draw a crowd if CFC ever had anything remotely close. I know without doubt that they didn't.

Thanks Slowwhand, this is how we establish ourselves, we just "do it" and bycommunity we get involved.

I will say this, CTP was very inactive, many of us core players, we never got a so called "group hug" from leadership here at Poly, moreso, we just started generating traffic, not spam, but actual founded traffic.

Soon newer players came around, some veteran players reemmerged from shadows, and then we were up and running.

Same with CIVII, Ming, rah and many others welcomed some folks who became interested in playing.

As for the abomination known as CIVIII, there was a certain amount of "ownershiop" of failure to get going directly associated with the game being broken itself.

Would be nice to see us "move forward"

I am recovering from a serious accident, was on many heavy meds and got distracted due to surgeries and recovery process.

I am looking at getting involved again.

Now, I'll give CFC credit for this, they did keep a Game of The Month thing going for Civ II. Matters little to me since I'm MP, but at least they didn't totally abandon.

Even as far back as '98 I got downloads from either Allard Hosfelt or CFC. I still don't know where the download stuff is here.

Real hard. It's a stuck message in Civ II.

There was a great Civ III community here, but the owners did very little to support them or give them the site resources they needed. And again, there was NO worse site than Poly when it came to uploading and downloading files. And very little was done to keep updating the look and feel of the site. It was good on news and interviews, but many forum people were never even really exposed to some of the good content that was here.
                Keep on Civin'

IIRC, he and Rah bought in after the damage of neglect was mostly done.

The real damage was done in the years when Civ3 was the draw, yet Mark and Dan didn't capture much of the interest and harness people to the site long term.

To be fair, they did do things to encourage the community such as provide the forums for demo games, add the forum for AU, etc. However, the senior staff of the site practically never drew from the pool of interested people who gathered here for Civ3, and the moderators of major forums just weren't interested in the game very much so spent little time there and a lot of crap was allowed to fester.

The lack of attention really bit when the the demo games turned toxic and ended up driving a fair number of people away. Server problems also helped with that, but there was little community to draw them back when server issues stopped being such a large issue.

I was only the forum admin. during the decline. I raised the issues many times and the response was always, we are working on it or we need to find somebody to do it. By the time MarkG bailed, the site was far behind CFC already. I wasn't an owner until way after the fact.

                          • There are two threads, Civ II and Civ II Scenario.
In Civ II, it's a stuck thread. Where do you think a Civ II strategy thread should go, now?
It's not Scenario, so that really cuts down on the possibilities of missing it.

                            • Please, I already knew what and where the GL was. I'm talking about having a dedicated spot on the front page that's easy to find and links to the downloads. All nicely organized, like CFC's. If there's one here I don't know about it... although that's likely due to the fact I log in straight to the forums.

                              • Found it, and looks pretty bad IMO. Over 1500 CivII entries, 484 for CivIII, 53 for CivIV. Pathetic.
