Well I got an email last night asking me to change my username. I was wondering how long that would take.

      Change it to santorum.

I thought the Stonecutters ran and owned CFC....

Lefty is a great mod, and Duke of Malborough and Stormerne were good friends too. Are they still there?

Not from what I can tell, but I just use the OT these days.

The number of units, terrain mods, scenarios, modpacks, and active mod contributors at CFC far outnumber those offered at Apolyton.

Yeah, it's a better Civ site, but kind of stifling as an Off-Topic forum.

I do like that it's active. I remember when it was the junior site. How did it blow up so well?

I agree that the OT Forum is not as colorful as is here. Apolyton does have a certain sophistication that I haven't found anywhere else. Although CFC has the Random Babes series of threads in it's OT.

I think the reason that CFC "blew up so well" is that most of the people that go there do so because they just want to talk about their passion and that is civ. For some reason there is not much discussion here about all things civ.

I remember in the heyday when the Civ3 forums here were so active and there were many heated debates about this strategy and that. Remember Velociryx's strategy guides? Those were the days.

The problem with here were mostly site related. The download feature just plain sucked... It was impossible to find anything... and the site didn't really support the mod community. Anybody that was developing stuff for civ found it much easier to deal with CFC than here. It's no surprise Poly lost the core community... it never really supported them. Poly pissed away a huge lead by not making the core elements of the site user friendly. It happens. There was always big talk, but no real action to deal with the real issues. People were more concerned about getting people to be nice vs just fixing the major problems of the site.

Yeah, whenever I was modding YEARS ago I always used CFC. However, when looking for Civ2 stuff the graphics compolations threads here were always superior.

The Civ2 Stuff was good. And while we had good "heated" discussions on Civ III, we didn't get the same graphics stuff we had with Civ 2. I can't tell you how many times I tried to find something here to download, and just ended up going to CFC to get it.

You can blame the site, software, etc, but that's only part of it.

Poly's leadership was a clique of old-timers and nothing was done to retain the community for civ3 that grew here. The forums were left to rot by mods and admins who didn't give a damn about the game, and almost nobody from that time was recruited to help keep the forums going. Dan trying to recruit lackies to do Joe jobs doesn't count.

Poly lost a generation. Poly lost. <--- period

NYE, I agree that Poly had many conflicting messages, within its hiearchy, but, most were due to personal desires as to what should be done and how.

As it is saiodd, as house divided will not survive.

Now, new ownership and by Roberts own admission, he diidnt see what was behind the scenes and it will take a lot more than he and his parter jerome had initially intended when envisioning a new direction.

I had been vocal about some here in former leadership but when it boils down, we as fans need to jump in, "be the nucleus" and help out.

I wish things had been different, they werent now we must move onward.

                                Of course we move forward.

The point of discussion is what happened to lead to CFC becoming the uber site. I don't buy that it was the software. Despite the software, a very good civ3 community evolved here at Poly. Firaxis recruited from it. Poly didn't.
