  • Liquor Price Comparison

Whenever I come home to good ol-Alberta I stock up on booze. In Soviet Ontario, you can only buy liquor from the government-owned LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario). They set the prices, they choose the stock. It's really awesome!

In Alberta, you can buy booze from private vendors. More stock, lower prices.

For comparison, I just bought a 15-year old Dalwhinnie scotch.

In Canadian Dollars, it was $56.67 here in Alberta, plus 5% GST and a $0.10 deposit.
In Ontario, it's $89.99 plus 5% GST + 8% PST (and I think deposit is included?):

Alberta: $59.60 with tax ($56.07 USD)
Ontario: $101.68 with tax ($95.65 USD)

    Insane. Ontario is demonstrably evil.

How much is this bottle where you live?

The BC Liquor Store has this bottle at $84.99 CDN -- $5 lower than Ontario's rate. I'm not sure about BC, but I'm pretty sure their situation is identical to the LCBO in Ontario.

    Ridiculous.

That's $37.66 USD -- awesome. That's awesome, but it's also a local product (in terms of country of origin) which may help explain it.

Are there any taxes/fees on top of that?

And if your dad likes Scotch...Dalwhinnie is a pretty easy-drinking, mild scotch. I still like it a lot, though.

BTW, these prices are for the 750 mL bottle.

Not too bad. Does Texas have high sin taxes?

I don't really know how they compare, to be honest.

It's 70cl, and that's an online price from a supermarket retailer. It might be a bit more in the shop. That includes taxes, I think, but is slightly reduced from the rrp.

I think the going rate seems to be about thirty quid.

It sounds suitable for the old man from what you've said. I'll have a look for it in the shops.

That's odd -- the bottles in the UK are 50mL less?

For some reason spirit bottles here tend to be 70cl (or a litre). Wine is usually 75cl. Must be a hangover from the 19th century temperance movement or something. Bloody do-gooders.

399 DKK for 1 liter ~ 82 CDN ordinary price, but I can get it for 279 DKK ~ 57 CDN for the moment.
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

This has a beer comparison. I would assume it to be comparable.

The Dalwhinnie bottle in the OP cost 470 NOK in the state monopoly's shops(only place stronger stuff than beer can be sold, except bars of course). 470 NOK = ~80 USD.

Compared to Canada, (or at least BC), sin taxes are much less in TX.
