We used minatures and a dry erase board, we weren't to picky on actual distances until the dragon's appeared. Still, much of it was pretty arbitrary.

That's what we did though one fellow had a square map which you could use a dry erase marker on and that worked quite well. then they had those pre made dungeon pieces which also worked well. They had the little squares but you could arrange them how you pleased.
