If you think you're going to pick up women playing D&D then you're wrong. I stopped playing D&D at 15-16 because it became obvious women don't like gamers while guys who were interested in other stuff stood a chance to get laid and, well, once you have a car other options open up. That said, it is social (with geeky fat guys) and can be fun so if you're secure it can be a fun hobby. I doubt I was the only angsty teenager dying for female attention.

If you're going to play then make it 1st ed or 2nd ed as 3rd and 4th are ****** as all get go.

It depends. 2nd is what I was used to. I played 3rd for a little while, and can be fun if your DM fleshes it out. We saw the books more as guidelines, the hard rules were 2nd ed.

Women are into guys. If guys happen to be into D&D, I promise you that it won't hurt them with most women, provided D&D doesn't run their lives. Hell, I'm into Civ4, a functional alcoholic, love history and make stupid history jokes on a regular basis in public, am vocal about hating Obama, am married to my job, and one of the most cynical people you'll ever meet, and I am able to meet women. D&D isn't the killer, it's just a symptom - guys who blame D&D for their lack of sex probably couldn't get laid in a monkey whorehouse with a sack full of bananas anyway.

In most of the games that I played in, the DM fudged the dice a bit if he was just learning the system (the best dm, really) or if there was some deal with demons or something (however, for that DM that didn't seem to be much of a negative thing, he basically used it to more strongly direct us than usual).

Player deaths did happen in all the last three games I played.

Volunteer at an animal shelter and you'll find oodles of women waiting to get ****ed. Hell, volunteer at a soup kitchen and you'll likely find a few decent looking hippy chicks who just want to help their fellow man. Go to a gamers' convention and you'll find one ugly fat chick who has resorted to gaming because she knows she'll be the only woman there and the pimple faced nerds won't care that she's fat because she's the only woman there.

I had a Dwarf warrior once, lots of fun. He was the first character with that DM that I actually got above 10th level. He was a good DM, you could lose a one or two characters a year, but if you got one that stuck he'd give a lot of leeway with your development. My Dwarf was awesome, and when I quit the game because I had to leave town he took the character over and is still an NPC from what I hear.

Oerdin Farr was my half-elf F/M/T who got to around 15th level in the thief class (the others were capped because of his race). I really liked him but as I said I gave it up about the time I got a car because I learned 1) teenage girls like guys with cars and 2) going to parties with beer dramatically increased your odds of getting your dick wet. Much more so then playing D&D with the fat kids.
