    Lori,

Then it's not a game anymore, it's a story. **** happens. Normally when DM's fudge it's for one of two reasons. To kill someone off or to not kill someone off. To me neither is acceptable. Besides, there are much less complaints when deaths occur if the person dieing sees the double 00 roll.

    David,

Then where did my sense of humor come from?

Oh, wait I get it...my father was a dwarf and my mother was a gnome?

I'm of the opinion that RPGs are (or can be) more story than game. It's a personal preference thing.

But I also don't play in adversarial environments when I game. No DM I play with would ever take out a PC. That's a real jerk thing to do. And because it's not an adversarial environment, there have never been any complaints.

I played a melee-centric Cleric a few years back who got torn in half by a Troll when the party was ambushed in the night. My character hadn't put on his armor yet and the DM rolled very well. But I didn't complain or get angry. I was shocked for a minute or two, and then I started looking through sourcebooks for my next character. [action=Lorizael]shrugs.[/action]

I feel like you're mocking me. Fortunately, I'm a pitcher of beer into my day, so I'm OK with it.

Umm, if there's no risk, how is it fun or challenging?

                  Volunteering

The only volunteering I do is posting at this site. I help educate and entertain mentally handicapped people. At least that's what I called it on my resume.

I had a Dwarf warrior once, lots of fun. He was the first character with that DM that I actually got above 10th level. He was a good DM, you could lose a one or two characters a year, but if you got one that stuck he'd give a lot of leeway with your development. My Dwarf was awesome, and when I quit the game because I had to leave town he took the character over and is still an NPC from what I hear.

Which is funny, because on my resume, I put down that I help encourage the confidence of the mentally disabled.

Asher, keep doing what you're doing. You are both educational and entertaining. Yeah buddy

No. It was kind of long-ish, for this thread. Summary?

The best DMs are not adversarial, they just throw the dice and let you know what happened. If they make the throw in front of you, there can be no bad feelings or misinterpretations. Dieing is part of the game. A fourth level fighter (hero) should be an accomplishment, not an entitlement. And an 8th level magic user should be respected. In both life and death

I was a "hold my cards close to my chest" DM. My brother was a "transparent" DM. He would even get volunteers to co-DM with him to help him make all the throws when a large party was playing. He wasn't afraid of others seeing the secrets of his world. He was considered a much better DM than I.
