Sorry for the OT but I have to ask whats going on? Also do you test for H1N1?

EDIT: It just seems like an Onion story.

      • No. And yes. We test for influenza. H1N1 is the only influenza going around right now. Even so, I only test in the very specific circumstances where knowing whether or not it is influenza is going to change my management--a severe asthmatic within the first 48 hours of symptoms, for instance.

        • It just struck a chord about the hype that H1N1 has recieved. Better safe than sorry from a public health standpoint but so far it seems like "a tempest in a teapot". The south has been the earliest hit, schools have been closed, there have been relatively draconian measures taken with regard to returning to school here but from what I see (as a parent) it's been a big ho-hum. The vaccine is finally arriving and if we hadnt been already living with it for 2 months (supposedly) we'd probably get vaccinated but at this point it seems like a waste of time.

This has provided an atmoshere in which the Iranians and the North Koreans feel it will be productive to return to negotiations. He has lessened tensions with Russia, which had been threatening to blossom into a new Cold War. He has changed the U.S. policy on climate change.
All this in 9 days? Really?

It sounds like the Nobel should have gone to the American people that elected him instead. If the award is given for Obama's expected future actions the voters should get it for providing him the opportunity.

Sounds like your experience has been similar to ours. It's gone through my son's school in Vestavia (Cahaba Heights) with no horror stories. The night after my son was diagnosed with it, he was bouncing off the walls at 9:30 or so like nothing was wrong. He's been largely lethargic since then, but that's about it, and he's already to the point of wanting to get back to school.

It's very entertaining watching Obama-bashers running in circles while chewing their own legs off in anger over this. My favorite so far is Kuci calling Obama's very humble acceptance speech arrogant. Kuci lives in a bizarro world where up is down, war is peace, poverty is riches, and oppression is opportunity.
He didn't deserve it, and to his credit, he knows it; which is more than I can say for you, Zk.

                • Get the vaccine, if for no other reason for the public health. The more people walking around with the virus, the more vulernable people will be exposed.

We had one death in Columbus last night from it; not surprisingly, people have FREAKED THE **** OUT. Never mind that probably 10 million Americans, at minimum, have been infected thus far.

How many times do I have to tell you, Tex? Reading is fundamental.

I'm not getting excited over the flu. I'm getting excited over parents getting excited over the flu.

I'm getting excited over the media scaring the **** out of people, instead of reporting what the CDC has said, namely: everyone 6 months to 24 years, pregnant women, primary caretakers of infants under 6 months of age, and those with chronic health conditions should be immunized. And--here's the key--for the vast majority of those who do get sick, the illness will be mild and will resolve itself in 3-5 days. While ill, stay home. Don't go to school, don't go to work, and unless you are seriously ill, don't go to the doctor's office!

This year's H1N1 vaccine was made in the exact same manner as the regular flu vaccine. Same companies, same process, everything. The only reason there are two separate vaccines is because the production would have been severely delayed had they tried to fold the new strain into the seasonal flu vaccines that were already being produced. It is very likely that there will be only one flu vaccine next year, which will incorporate the H1N1 strain into it.

If you're in one of those groups mentioned above (or a health care worker), get the vaccine. If not, you could still consider getting it, depending on supply; if not, just be smart.

                          • I know a 41 year old man, who's in the local hospital, that they're thinking may die. No pre-exisitng conditions.
Yet, he's being put on dialysis. Might the flu cause organ failure? So it would appear, at least to a dumbass layman.
Wait a minute, even the nurse thought it highly possible. I'll be damned, and she's medically educated.

You can lay off the insults, Guy, or just quit responding to me. As far as your arrogant attitude about parents, they're worried about their children. God forbid.

                            • They need perspective. So far, it appears maybe 1 in 10,000 who get infected are going to die. This is right in line with the usual seasonal flu. Yes, so far, it appears that different groups are at different risks, hence the vaccination recommendations.

However, I state again: 1 in 10,000. Essentially, that means those infected have a better chance of dying in a car accident this year than they have of dying of the flu.

It's more the media's fault than it is the parents', but when the kid is bouncing off the walls and throwing blocks around the room, I shouldn't need to spend ten minutes convincing them that he's not dying, that he doesn't need to be admitted to the hospital.

Look at this, and the number noted is children only.
US school swine flu event shows vaccine challenge
                                Reuters - David Morgan - ‎2 hours ago‎
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that 76 US children have died from H1N1 since April, with widespread swine flu in 37 states ...
This nurse also mentioned that should the 41 year old that I spoke of die, it will undoubtedly be said that he had an "underlying condition. That's pretty much been the norm." That tells me that your theory on buildup by the media doesn't hold water. The people at risk all had underlying conditions. That's bull****, but that's what the media reports.
                                That's what they're told.

BUT, this isn't an imaginary flu thread. It's about Lord Obama.
