Wasn't it clear that the USSR was in decline by then? I mean talking to my parents they told me that everyone knew Yugoslavia would fall apart sooner or later after TIto's death in the 80's, it was just a slow process of it being ok to say so in public. USSR was in decline since 1973 at least (but it was a threat for much longer). Whether it was clear to anyone by that time I don't know.Comment

According to reports I read (a long time ago) the USSR could have kept going, economically, for another 17 years had the social implosion not occurred.I'm consitently stupid- Japher
