EDIT: I think analyst at a big IB might be one of the worst jobs I've ever heard of, given the quality of people recruited for it. I think a lot of them end up being Excel jockeys for 4 years. I guess it's nice to collect a decent paycheque in your mid 20s, and their future is good if they can get into a top MBA, leading to an associate job at my age, but it seems like phd in academia is an easier road to travel, if they have the smarts for it (which I think most do, given the difficulty of selection process).

Actually, coming back from my Sweden interview I sat next to a banker and talked to him a bit about what he did. He was in boutique banking (which is quite a bit different than IB and wasn't effected negatively by the economy). I learned quite a bit.

I am sure that KH will find interesting stuff in IB, even if I still don't think it is as inherently interesting as physics.

It was going pretty bad for me. Was hired quite recently though (after about a month). Finished my second day at work today.

Working for the government in the Budget Department, and more specifically in the change management unit as gov'ment is now implementing a new SAP system in order to integrate every federal department's budget and accounting system.

I have now experienced the gruesome lethargic state in which some people in other departments have been living for what must be decades...

Tough it out. Look again when economy turns. That may be what I end up having to do.

I've got an inside lead on a job in Raleigh, NC. Anyone have any info on the area? The Research Triangle Park offers nice job security so I'm considering it. That, and I should get paid about 50% more than I currently do, and the cost of living seems similar to the Cincinnati area.

Got my first rejection email from one of the places I sent a resume to

The problem is that I don't actually know who's hiring and who's not. It's become apparent that Goldman's hiring, but beyond that I'm dependent on recruiters for my knowledge (well, I have a couple of other tidbits of info from insiders).

I save those for prosperity sake.

I remember my first job hunt in 1999 I got a ton of postcard like rejection letters. I saved them and then burned them when I got a job with Genentech. I guess it could have been worse.

I haven't stopped looking for a new job since I got the piece of crap job I was working at until this morning. They eliminated my position.

                    FREEDOM!

I have an interview in a little over an hour for another place.

Thank god. I don't think I could have managed another week without quitting. I am pissed they let me drive in this morning just to tell me this. 70 miles round trip and a toll.

Doesn't Hopkins have a career services department? Talk to them. My school keeps a specific list of alumni who make themselves available to students seeking work in their fields.
