  • I interviewed 11 university students in one day the other week on campus. The room literally had this assembly-line-esque button to summon the next victim. I found it amusing.

        That sounds terrible.

Interviewing 11 students in one day, or the button?

And yes, it was terrible. I left Toronto at 6:30am and got home at 8pm. Took 2.5 hours to get there, 3.5 hours back (it's only 120km).

              • Spent 30 minutes molding my cover letter to fit an application at one big bank (one of top 10 globally in terms of balance sheets). Start filling in the application form. They don't have a section for upload of cover letters.

Let me repeat that: they don't have a section for upload of cover letters. Instead, they have a section where you write up to 90 words in response to each of 3 horribly generic questions.

                What. The. ****.

I had useful information in my cover letter. Like the fact that I was applying for one job, but that there was another job in the same department which also sort of suited me.

                • Did an ok-ish interview last week for Army JAG, which is meaningless since they interview for every app on an app-to-position ratio that spiked from 1:5 last year to 1:17. Got a callback to do a weak-ass interview with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on a 1:100 ratio, which means maybe ~1:20 odds now assuming a ~20% callback rate. Nothing but paper apps so far for about three dozen agencies and two dozen judicial clerkships, all even bigger long shots.

Just from the market alone it looks like I'll be an overqualified MP in 8 months, which could be worse.
                  Unbelievable!

                  • JAG ****ing sucks. NCIS is better but still ****ing awful.

                      • My law prof was in JAG and said it paid sheit but it certainly taught him a lot, especially about respect and rank. I could never do that.

Let me repeat that: they don't have a section for upload of cover letters. Instead, they have a section where you write up to 90 words in response to each of 3 horribly generic questions.
Those are stupid. But, my cover letter isn't the best it could be, so those might be better for me.

The only leads I have gotten thus far have been via recruiters, who are just trying to push flesh, an unsolicited position that I applied for anyway (and actually I viable information), and through an old colleague who has since moved on from the old company is pulling from his end to get me in for an interview with a pretty well respected company in another state.

I've gotten some nice rejection emails though. Still, the best is the one that says they have decided to go with someone who is actually qualified for the job. No sheit? Why even bother telling me that, your silence does so just fine.

                        Anyway, keep scrounging.

                        • Just got another rejection letter from a company I want to work for, but for a job I didn't want. So, whew.

                          Very nicely worded that one.

"This is not a reflection of your background or experience; rather, it is our determination that the near-term position requirements would not be of mutual interest. Once again, we very much appreciate your interest and extend to you our best wishes."

Guess they read through my BS. I could not work in the department they wanted me in, talk about tedium.

yeah, did my teaching english as a foreign language course last weekend, so that's another step on the road to rio. the only thing i really need to do now is to learn portuguese, and i'm off. i reckon about 6 months should it, then it's goodbye blighty and hello sunshine!

i'm pretty excited about it. i think i'm quite bad at doing ordinary things (career, bird, house etc.), so i may as well go and do something extraordinary.

Both rejections I've gotten back have been very nicely worded. I'm pretty sure they're form letters:

"We have thoroughly reviewed your application and are genuinely impressed by your record of achievement to date. However, at this time we do not have any open positions that match your qualifications. This does not in any way reflect negatively on your credentials, as we make every effort to match the best-qualified candidates against a limited number of available positions."

                                and

"We have reviewed your resume, and, although it is clear that someone with your qualifications has much to offer, we have been unable to identify an ideal match between your particular background and experience and our current needs. However, we will keep your resume in our files on the chance that a suitable position should become available at a later date."

I actually really appreciate hearing back from people who aren't interested in me. It's a lot better than not knowing.
