      • What was funny about Goldman was that my school is the second lowest-quality one of anybody I met.

There were loads of Harvard and Yale people from math & physics, a former Princeton junior faculty (!) member in the math department and a couple of guys from Columbia. The only lower-ranked school was USC

              • Got the offer from the second group. Now I just have to decide what job I want.

Unified offer across both, so no weight needs to be placed on that.

EDIT: removed any hints as to salary

                • Kuci, even worse the code would be in their proprietary scripted language.

                  • What are the hours like in each group? Comparable?

                    • Probably. I didn't ask directly. That would be a terrible question to ask an interviewer.

The sense I got was ~60 for both. This was based on seeing what time people came in, asking if they'd still be around at such and such a time, and asking if they would be around on Saturday (questions spaced out over hours).

I can be a tricky son of a ***** when I want to be.

                      • That was a good way to play that. Only 60 hours a week is fantastic.

                        • The traders and desk quants have far worse hours, I think.

                          • I don't think most people are very effective over 60 hours a week, so it is good if they use their skilled assets appropriately.

                            Congrats, too.

                            • 11 hours is my limit per day. After that I usually start making errors that will consume my hours the next day correcting. And then there's the burnout factor. You can get away working people 11-12 hours a day for a month or two but after that, they stop working at peak efficiency an their performance starts to fall off.

                              • I would say limit is 12 hours per day for 6 days a week, as something that I can sustain for longer than 1-2 weeks.
