I've always understood it as lying, plain and simple. But I have wondered. The commandment you should not kill excludes killing in war(we know because of the wording), so for all I know there might be exclusions in this commandment too. I mean, if I could save someone from the nazis in WW2 by lying, I'd say that was ok. But I don't have anything biblical to back that up.
Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.-Isaiah 41:10
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made - Psalms 139.14a

      Were the crusades a war?

        What about:
2464 The eighth commandment forbids misrepresenting the truth in our relations with others. This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear witness to their God who is the truth and wills the truth. Offenses against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness: they are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the foundations of the covenant.
        From the Catholic Catechism.

It seems significantly more far-reaching than your interpretation. Or were you just defining the words "False Witness"?

That's because he bears false witness.

It means that when you know someone is lying it should really, really bother you - like to the point where you can't bear it.

The Catholic Church is not Ancient Judaism. I think that would be where the mix-up comes from.

No, I'm not baptised in the Catholic church, but then I didn't have a choice in the matter.

I am confirmed. Did my confirmation back in 2005. I've got plenty of witnesses who would be happy to verify...

I try to tell the truth if someone wants/expects me to tell the truth. Of course this has no bearing whatsoever on ancient Jewish law.

That's one of the laws Jesus said you could break.
