Romney was born and raised in Michigan. During the 2007 primaries, he highlighted that he was from Michigan. I'm thinking that's good enough. Oh, and Romney would never in a million years won Massachusetts in a Presidential election.

Gore was representing Tennessee, but between that time and when he ran he was Vice President for 8 years and the political demographics of the state changed.

      He won Tennessee in 1996.

I didn't realize he was on top of the ticket.

President Clinton won Tennessee in 1996 (actually, probably more accurate, Senator Dole lost Tennessee in 1996 - recall Dole was far more moderate than Dubya, more like his father actually).

From what I can see, Gore/Leiberman lost about 20 counties across Tennessee, particularly in the area of Anderson/Roane County, where he lost 5 neighbouring counties. This is in Appalachia.

Clearly Clinton was able to draw these folks in such a way that Gore could not.

Or, perhaps, Dole who was a George H.W. Bush Republican was not able to win those counties. I'm sure if Gore faced off against a Dole like candidate in 2000, he would have had much better luck in those counties. And if Clinton faced off against a Dubya like candidate in 1996, he would have had a more difficult road to climb in those counties.

That and the benefit of incumbency prior to Lewinsky-gate.

Gore attracted the same percentages of votes as Clinton did. From what I can see, when Perot stepped out, all of Perot's vote went to Dubya.

Since then, the democrats have dropped 6 percent in Tennessee, and it's gone from being a sea of red to deep blue.

Obama had the worst performance of any Democrat in Tennessee since McGovern. McCain polled better in Tennessee than Reagan.

Think of it this way: When Gore was tapped as Vice President, Tennessee had 2 Democratic Senators. Since 1995, Tennessee has elected no Democratic Senators (they have had a Democratic Governor, but Bredesen isn't your typical Democrat)

... are you trying to undermine your own argument, especially this:

Clearly Clinton was able to draw these folks in such a way that Gore could not.

I mean you are attempting to make my point for me?

Whatever 'demographic' change occurred, happened after 2000, not before.

Gore drew exactly the same percentage as Clinton drew. If you are right that the demographic change happened before, then Gore received a substantial home state bonus, but it was not enough to overcome.

In any case, he couldn't attract the same folks that voted him in to the senate to vote for him as President.

As the going from two Democratic Senators in 1992 to two Republican Senators by 2000 indicates

Except that Al Gore has more personality than Mitt Romney.

Then how do you explain Gore receiving precisely the same amount of the vote as Clinton in '92 and '96?

not really. If the guy can't even carry his home state, it's pretty obvious he wasn't well liked. The election was a toss up, no one stole it.

Considering that Bush 1 and Dole had far less of the vote than Dubya, and exit polling numbers shows that Perot voters were evenly split in their 2nd choice for Clinton and Bush or Dole, I don't think Dem voting staying at 48% means much while Rep voting from went from 42% to 45% to 51%.

Or are you one of those poor delusional folks who think Perot took 100% of the vote from Republicans even though he was wildly popular with unions?

Second sentence seems to dramatically contradict the first. He wasn't well liked.... and the election was a toss up. Unless you want to say Dubya wasn't well liked either, which is kinda silly.
