1. The POTUS was careful enough to claim stupidity, not racism. Having read more about this incident than I really wanted to, I continue to agree with him.The idea this had anything to do with race.
2. While I'm entirely open to the idea that it was not, in fact, about race, you simply cannot know that. And I think someone who honestly thought about it can understand why another reasonable person might think race played a part, even if you ultimately disagree.

From a purely political standpoint, yeah, it was probably better to say something like "I don't know the details, so I won't comment." Instead, he judged based on limited facts. The kicker is that he was right.
