In that sense the government has a legitimate role in determining who and how the roads may be used.

For most health care facilities this line of arguement does not apply and mandates come from another line of reasoning.

I don't understand what you're arguing here, Ogie. The case for mandatory liability auto insurance is much stronger both from a rights-based perspective as well as from a utilitarian perspective than is the case for mandatory health insurance.

Bringing up mandatory liability auto insurance thus weakens your argument against mandatory health insurance.

              The serious answer is

              1) People are deathly afraid of change.

              2) Many, many people are truly stupid.

              3) The people who make obscene amounts of money because of the current situation play A LOT of ads to create more fear of change and to prey upon people's stupidity.

              4) The people who make money off of the current system pay politicians obscene amounts of money to make sure their gravy train continues.

No. Drunk driving should be illegal so long as there's a significant risk of such behavior resulting in injury to other people and their property.

I agree. My point was that there is a signifcant portion of the electorate that feel that compelling people to have auto insurance (despite the rather legit reasons for the government to mandate it) is draconian.

The point being if these same people take issue with auto insurance mandates the level of rancor will be even more so for mandating health coverage where the rationale is not as clear.

Ogie, I seriously doubt that's a significant portion of the electorate.

                    Do you have polls?

Why can't you accept one of the many models of socialized healthcare that have been proven to work worldwide?

Americans, why do you hate yourselves and like dying?
