Problem is when millions of people are misled by front-page 'mistakes', and a relative few see the retraction. And I don't see what twitter and facebook have to do with this.
Cropping a photo and subsequently confusing a huge rally of supporters between two candidates at whom the entire world is watching is a pretty big mistake.
And even their corrected caption doesn't identify the rally as pro-Ahmadenejad, just says 'Tehran has seen mass demonstrations by all sides since the disputed election'. A true statement, but not really in line with the photo of which Ahmadenejad remains cropped out.
I don't really have an opinion on the BBC still using the cropped image and the caption they use.
My point is that when a country kicks out all foreign journalists there is no way a news organisation can get news in the traditional way. All the happenings in Iran right now are getting out by way of the Interwebs social media, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and whathaveyou.
So the only way the traditional news organisations like the BBC or newspapers are going to get any information is through informal channels like these. And as long they explitedly stat where their information is coming from I don't have a problem.
Within weeks they'll be re-opening the shipyards
And notifying the next of kin
Once again...
Given the fact it still features Castro, I fail to see the point.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

So you don't think BBC has a journalistic responsibility to it's readers to vet stories and photos on the front page? Just post up whatever they come across and source it?
I understand that it's difficult to get solid info from out of Iran, but if they can't get anything solid, they shouldn't print anything.
if they can't get anything solid, they shouldn't print anything.
And the absence of reporting would serve the pursuit of truth how? The problem isn't journalistic integrity so much as news consumers foolishly taking anything they see at face value. It's simple enough to qualify that X or Y report originated from Twitter/Facebook/etc. and should accordingly be taken with a huge grain of salt, leaving the onus on the consumer to attach whatever degree of credibility they find reasonable. If they take it at face value then they're the a**holes, not the mere intermediary.
Printing BS captions and photos is not pursuing truth, it's saying "We think we found some truth, and here it is." BBC was wrong.
And blaming the reader now, that's rich. Both the reader and publication have responsibilities. BBC failed in theirs, and they have enormous responsibility when it comes to influencing the minds of millions re: a very significant international event.
And the photo is credit is GETTY, a stock image repository, not facebook or anything random like that - why are you going on about twitter, et al?
edit: I do agree that anyone who takes BBC seriously is doing themselves a disservice, and my post was directed at those people.

Yes, but that's hard to do when the government has officially banned all journalists, shuts down the telephone & internet, and uses fake messages to disseminate its own propaganda.
