maybe some people would enjoy a dead babe thread. It would only be a combination of 2 existing threads.
edit: though to be honest yesterday i stared at a photo of a pretty 17 y/o killed in a tragic traffic accident, and thought to myself that she was freaking hot, and it's such a waste.
in the context of this thread though, i think such remarks are off topic.

The key point is really that there's elite dissent in each of these factions. Generals had to be rounded up by the government. The Mayor of Tehran is an Ahmedinejad opponent. So is the senior IRGC commander who ran in this election, Rezaee. And importantly, the clergy have been sidelined. This is a coup by Khamenei and the Revolutionary Guard. Iran is now a military dictatorship, rather than an Islamic Republic. Khamenei was never part of the clerical establishment; his "Ayatollah"ship was essentially dictated by Khomenei. Ahmedi is the first President who isn't a cleric. There are a lot of people in the political elite who are not happy, and Rafsanjani is reportedly hard at work organizing them.
Khamenei was an hojatoleslam or middle-ranking cleric who bypassed the other high-ranking clerics when he assumed power after Khomeini. Many religious leaders disagree with Khamenei and believe his appointment was inappropriate.
That's why there is a considerable religious faction supporting the 'reformist' Mousavi instead of adhering to the hardliners. Doesn't mean they're less religious or less anti-western though...

Yup, history repeating itself. The one thing people learned by watching the Soviet Union collapse is that all you need to do is shoot at protesters and they eventually go away.
