Not you in particular, but I usually lump you with the rest of the right-wing nuts. It was meant for the whole lot of you.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

          • Bugs, if you're talking to me:

Yes, that is very basic. I am no lawyer, and I assume that you know the difference. What I'm attempting to demonstrate is that there is a difference between making distinctions based on mens rea and making distinctions based on motive, and that saying that we already take into account the state of mind of the accused therefore hate crime legislation is no different is disingenuous at best.

you consider 1460 incidents (FBI's term, not mine) in a year in the US to be "widespread violence"?

Where do you place, say Detroit, in your violence scale?

                • The number I've heard bandied about is that support for gay marriage increases at the rate of ~2% per annum due to simple demographics (the younger cohort is fine with gay marriage, the older one is dying off)

                  FiveThirtyEight weighs in:

Marriage bans, however, are losing ground at a rate of slightly less than 2 points per year. So, for example, we'd project that a state in which a marriage ban passed with 60 percent of the vote last year would only have 58 percent of its voters approve the ban this year.

                  • It all depends on the strategy. Gay people would be smart to wait.

Pushing it on the ballot for 2010, is just asking for the people to smack it down again.

Up here we had 58 percent in favour of electoral reform. This election, it was 32. The same can happen when people are asked to vote again for the same thing. It pisses people off.

Why? His point will still stand, either way it goes. Having the rights of the minority subject to the current whims of the (very slight) majority is a valid complaint.

Whining like a stuck pig when a CA court stumbles upon a decision based on law given the actual content of the opinion seems like a bit of an over reaction to me. How about you?
