Well this is great news for those of us who do not own a new home as of yet.

I agree, but you've got to live in the US (or the UK or some other select countries) to take advantage of the huge real estate price falls.

How are things going down under?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Down under things are going well, generally house prices have stagnated, minor falls in some markets, none more than about 10%, and maybe some cities no falls yet or very minor rises still. But then although this week almost certain to be officially in recession, unemployment is still relatively low at about 5 1/2% and rising at a modest pace, so no big worries here, banks are still hugely profitable, all majors still making multibillion dollar profits.
So no financial crisis as such and demand from China for raw materials again increasing and keeping the general economy from falling too fast.

Was there a big runup in real estate prices in the last 10 years like in the US and UK?

Interesting. I thought things were worse in Oz.

BK, stop spamming please. I'm not interested in your posts, and when you do post in a thread I can no longer tell at a glance if someone intelligent has posted in it because you now show up as the most reason poster.

Sure, you can atleast for some. I'm a smoker and I hate the fact that they now want $65 for a carton in the US but since I live right on the border I can go to Mexico to buy a carton of the same cigs made in the same US factory for $18 so I do it. If a VAT passes then instead of shopping at Costco in the US I'll just go drive the extra 20 miles and go shopping at the Costco in Mexico.
No indian reservations in CA? That's the best place up here, they don't pay any taxes.
