Call To Power 2 Cradle 3+ mod in progress: https://apolyton.net/forum/other-games/call-to-power-2/ctp2-creation/9437883-making-cradle-3-fully-compatible-with-the-apolyton-edition
Make me a mod. I promise to abuse my powers by cutting and pasting random posts between different threads thereby making discussions utterly unintelligible.
Asher, the website is a community - and one based on Civ. However much crap Blake posted on the OT about his personal beliefs does not denigrate his work on the game.
Not sure what your major malfunction is, but I didn't criticize his work on the game in a way that took into his beliefs/stupidity in the OT in any way.
I didn't even criticize his work. What I am criticizing is how much some of you fellate him for what he's done.
You might choose to belittle him as a mere modder rather than a core designer/implementer on the grounds that "anyone could have done that". The fact is that anyone didn't do it - he did.
That may impress you, but it doesn't phase me. I don't give a ****. The difference between you and me is I understand the technical aspects of what Blake did do, so I understand it is not as impressive or astounding as you seem to imply it was. Yes, he did it and no one else did. So what? Get off it.
You think they wouldn't have found some guy to tweak the AI for BtS after Soren left if it wasn't for Blake?
In fact it's not true to say that anyone could have done it. Yes, you could have - because you are a highly intelligent and technically able bloke - but you didn't.
I'm smart enough to realize Firaxis takes advantage of some people in the community to do work for free or low cost that they would normally have to pay someone far more capable to do. This doesn't make the people Gods or any more or less important than anyone else on this site in my eyes.
I don't "disrespect" what Blake did, but I don't look at it with awe and endless wonder like others here. He contributed to the community in his own way, yes, but that's not to say other people here have not either. There's probably a dozen posters in the OTF alone that have provided more valuable contribution to the community in my view than Blake ever has.
You just really need to let go the argument that "he did it and no one else did!". It's beyond weak. He did it -- good for him. I'll be sure to let everyone know every time I commit code to the Firefox trunk or provide usability feedback, too. BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WOULD DAMNIT.
Frankly, Firaxis mines this community for cheap labour and you guys all bend over and give it to them because there's tons of people on this site that get off on the adoration of others for their contribution. I consider it to be taking advantage of people to ask them to do things for free that ship as part of a retail product, or offer them token cash without benefits, etc. It's also why you get "characters" like Blake and Dale that end up doing it. It takes a special kind of person.

I gre up across the border from Quebec in the early-mid 1960's and then in the 1970's across from New Brunswick (Both are provinces in Canada by the way)
i actually think Asher fits the typical Canadian I was exposed to, versus danQ.
danQ has allways been a gentleman to me, never have we drawn Sabres and rattled away
But i will applaud Asher, he is the loudest canuck in the room, and for that, he gets his share of attention.

Win-Win for everyone
We use DanQ and his clones as decoys.

Better yet. We should have one sub forum where Ben, Asher, MOBIUS, and KH are all given mod powers.
Checks and balances?

I can't be arsed to read all these comments or look at announcements. Wouldn't it just be simpler to write Dale April Fool's continued, and lock the thread?
1) Don't take yourself or the site too seriously
2) Don't appoint Asher as any sort of moderator.
3) Do appoint Asher as techno-god.
4) The off-topic is the off-topic. It has its own ecology.
5) You own the site, but much of the content of the site comes from the top hundred or so posters. Respect them.
6) Do start a civ ladder or other community type competitions
7) Be open in your administrative decisions. Make them broadly known, and allow discussion and criticism of them.
That about sums it up.
Good luck, CS/Robert.
Apolyton's Grim Reaper2008, 2010 & 2011 RIP lest we forget... SG (2) and LaFayette -- Civ2 Succession Games Brothers-in-Arms
I´d support the idea of having two seperate OT-forums - one that is integrated in the site (poly) itself, is moderated like any other serious game-site is (OT or not) and can actually be called ´civilized OT´ and one that is only linked to on poly, which goes unmoderated, for all i care, but is visibly seperated from the rest of the site, with the usual disclaimer of rejecting any responsibility of what is being posted there (call it ´barbaric fun´ or whatnot). The later than could be slowly but surely be laid off or be taken over by someone outside poly. Like a spinoff or something. This might be a good way to ´cleanse´ this site, without it denegenating into a ban-fest and flame-war - and noone could claim, they were denied their right of free speech.
About mod-policy: Look at ´the other site´ - you have controversial discussions there in the OT, but even if somebody ends up being in the ´hotseat´ (defending his/her opinion against a vast majority of posters), it still stays ´civilized´. There are probably thousands, if not millions of good site-policy-examples to pick from all over the net. There is no need to re-invent the wheel IMO.
EDIT: Just to avoid misunderstandings: Participating in the ´barbaric fun´ would not mean auto-ban on the ´civilized OT´. It would all depend on the content and form of the particular posts (not the posters). I would be willing to promise not to post on the ´barbaric fun´, as my ´whining´ seems to annoy people who would like to post there (and my whining would be as utterly out of place in SUCH a forum as the contribution i like to whine about are here). So this would benefit all of us.
