KH: OK. I understand. It seems more complicated to me in some circumstances, but it certainly could be one indication.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

It's a useful exercise, but I don't know of anybody credible who is proposing that a high speed rail line will cover both capital and operating costs.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. If it doesn't do so when proper externalities are levied on motorists making the same trip then it's not worth doing. Add another lane to I-95 instead.12-17-10 Mohamed Bouazizi NEVER FORGET

That's the number for the Japanese bullet train line from Osaka to Tokyo, their most profitable line. They run 150 million trips a year.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

The Japanese bullet trains rock though they are going through some of the most densely populated places in Japan so that would explain why they're profitable.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

I've always found trains to be considerably more comfortable than planes. You can move around easier, the air isn't stale and recycled, you can change seats away from the 300 pounder who is snoring and drooling on your shoulder (or the three month old who won't stop shrieking), easier on the nerves of people with flying phobias, etc.
If there were a Columbus-Detroit train, I'd ride it in a heartbeat to see my family, even if it didn't shave any time off the usual drive (3 hrs). What's amazing to me is that Columbus, with ~800,000 in the city proper, and ~2 million metro, doesn't have any passenger rail service. None. Zip. Not a metrorail to serve the area, nor any passenger links to other cities."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

I'm not sure why that Amazes you, Guy. Ben: About 10,000 people make that trip per day. Roughly 6,000 via Amtrak. Roughly 4,000 via the air shuttles.
So about two orders of magnitude less than Tokyo-Osaka.
In other words, you've got to be fvcking kidding me.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. What about car trips Dan? Edit, I get about 2.6 percent of the Japanese load.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
