    Ben.

Under 10 miles, bike, bus with a reserved lane, or subway is usually faster than car.
At 500 miles a bullet train is faster than a plane. And no, density along the line doesn't matter. You could be crossing barren land that it wouldn't matter, if the two cities needed to be connected.

Will it be a bullet train to Mingapulco?

I'm not sure if the population density warrants that trip, even though I'm a frequent flier.

Agreed. What would be the point of connecting to your border cities when our border cities don't have any rail service to speak of? Let alone the fact that they are Detroit and Buffalo, aka Detroit without the glitz.

HSBC Arena is downright spectacular compared to the Joe (discounting history).

Maybe in downtown Manhattan. Otherwise, um, no.

Where do you live? In a dense urban area, it's often the case.

                        It's definitely true in Toronto.

He lives in the type of neighborhood that 95% of Americans live in.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Obviously I don't live in a dense urban area. That's why I mentioned Manhattan. Clearly, in that environment, bike/bus may indeed trump a car. I've driven in Manhattan. Ugh.

I used Manhattan as my example, but obviously in any dense urban center, it applies.

There are lots and lots of places that aren't that dense, obviously including where I live (which I suspect is less common than Dan thinks - it's really quite rural). But even if we go with Hartford, my place of work... if I want to get someplace that is ~5 miles distance, man, give me the car.

Unless you live right next to a subway station or right next to an express bus line that picks up every 5 minutes and goes right where you need to go, a car or cab will be the quickest way to get there in the vast majority of the US. Definitely 95%+.

I live in the middle of the city and this is still the case. Parking will be a *****, however. And there will be select times when getting from a particular point A to point B may be quicker by other methods (like Friday afternoons, when everybody is trying to get out of the city to the beach).

New Jersey has a good statewide mass transit system. I would still rather use a car.

                                ...

Except for the time I took the train into Manhattan from Denville. That was nice. Really really slow, but nice.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
