    The Off-Topic Community.

This is the point you are missing...

Come for the game, stay for the off-topic community.

I got bored of Civ in approx 1999.

Come on folks... stick to the purpose of the thread, and be positive. If you want to spam or make rude comments, go else where.

When OT posters can take their personality to the on-topic forums, it's going to kill any legitimate on-topic posting. The way to save this site is to keep on-topic clean, or at least segregate the useful from the trash. Like Civ III had the general forum for trash (and re-directing to strat forum) while the strat forum was kept rather pristine. (Apolyton University is far too structured to really allow for a good strat community to form for a game. The Civ III version was a great place for the community that had formed to have a sandbox to play in though.) CIV didn't have that when I was posting. The CIV forums early on, even the "Vel's strat threads", were constantly interrupted by a bunch of epeen contests and trolling (even from other websites), due to lack of moderation outside closing the threads when they hit 500 posts.

CIV had some other problems for the Apolyton community. Apolyton Civ III forums were driven by players analyzing the game mechanics, not much else was going on (except whining in the General forum). CIV came with the code out there for everyone to see, negating most of the draw to the type of analysis done in the Civ III strat forum. Plus a large percentage of the prolific Civ III strat posters having been involved in the summerplay session at Firaxis. When the game hit shelves, and NDAs were lifted, it was already "old" for a good share of the community.

Civfanatics on the other hand had vibrant single player competitions (GOTM, HOF) that could keep the more dedicated SP players interested in the game and thus posting on the forums. Much better moderation of on-topic forums as well, so the useful posts are much easier to find. And while CFC had just as many involved in summerplay, it was a much lower percentage of the "useful" on-topic posters.

I should add that it was much easier for Civ III forum moderation. That's because Civ III was released without MP. It gave the SP community plenty of time to develop without much influence of the MP community. Nothing wrong with an MP community if that's what you're going for, but Apolyton was not set up for it (ladder, tourneys, ect). If your bread and butter is intelligent analysis of game mechanics, allowing in the EoN's and ladder trolls isn't going to help at all.

SMAC just had its 10th year anniversary.

There was a celebration planned on poly.

But it fizzled out and did not quite get developed. It could, however, still possibly be rescued.

There were some nice photos of faction leaders posted, however.

I'd just throw up my own forum software, even.
            Why don't you do that?

Feel free to answer by PM or in another thread since you were politely asked by ming to "take it elsewhere" in an earlier post and I apologize for perpetuating an off-topic conversation.

What is stopping you from making your own forum? And why would you make your own forum? What is wrong with Counterglow?

Please no one feed the trolls and maybe they will go away...

but seriously. Apolyton has gone downhill, and ive been talking to Ken about it. I personally think that there is ABSOLUTELY WORTHLESS MODERATION here. I have made maybe 50 posts outside of the ModCast threads, and this is over several years. Most of those posts were for my Mod that noone else posted in (except by wouter once or twice). the rest of them were in various places, and EVERY SINGLE THREAD HAD THE SAME TROLLS AS ALL THE OTHER THREADS.

Trolling is killing this site, and the cabinet and staff allows it every day. Now its to the point that the majority of posts here are done by the same cabal of trolls.

Apolyton as a whole should focus on our successful podcasts, civcon, and more podcasts. and as well should reward those who aren't being trolls.

Sigh.... No Spamming, and as GT said, keep it positive.

I guess some people simply can't read.

Oh, ok. Gotcha. I wasn't even trying this time.

EDIT: No, this wasn't it. Go ahead and do as I say and save your pain meds.

All it would take to see a resurgence would be something to jumpstart the engine, pull a handful of folks here who could/would really sink their teeth into some upcoming release and start pulling insights out of it. Then you'd see the folks at CFC linking HERE again, like they used to in the old days.

It's a good thing for CFC that Civ 3 was made. A) They used it to brainwash players. B) I stay so busy saying how much Civ 3 sucked, that I don't give those jackasses at CFC enough attention here. C) I'll work on rectifying B).
