    Often people is understand quantifying military projects based upon one aspect

    Perhaps the Raptor is not the aircraft we need but what will the next one cost or will it be cost prohibitive based upon budgetary constraints?

    I remember a movie with Gregory Hines and Chevy Chase, selling military weaponry from back in the early 80's.

    It rained and this drone aircraft couldnt fly when it got wet

    I remember a remark made by one of the contractors..."Who cares if it works, we have the contract on the replacement parts"

      The marginal value of additional F-22s (beyond the 187 already in train) as relates to air superiority missions is low.

          The fact that apparently they were able to cut from the originally planned 750 F-22s to 295 and still maintain a robust air superiority capability.

          Besides, as far as I know, no drones have been designed with air superiority as a primary mission. Who's to say drones can't do just fine in this capacity?

            There's no objective way of measuring whether our air superiority capability is "robust" or not; we'll find out the next time we get in a war where we need to establish air superiority.

            There are, of course, computer simulations that attempt to determine "how much is enough" in a more rigorous fashion than mere guesswork, but I doubt you're basing your claims on access to them or their results.

                  Drake, who the **** is going to field enough good aircraft to argue with 300 F-22s and a bunch of lighter fighters, these lighter fighters being the equivalent of any aircraft they're likely to fly against?

                            They'll be ready eventually; the question is whether they'll be ready soon enough to make a jump from the F-15 to a replacement UAV a better solution than replacing the F-15 with the F-22 in the interim. That doesn't appear to be the case.
