"We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work...After eight years of this Administration, we have just as much unemployment as when we started... And an enormous debt to boot!" — Henry Morgenthau, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Treasury secretary, 1941.
I disagree with his conclusions. For one, they clearly did not have "just as much unemployment as when [they] started." For another, it's pretty obvious that what finally put an end to unemployment was the war, which was an utterly MASSIVE spending program. We then came out of that war with some substantial advantages (much of the rest of the industrialized world blown to hell) that we will not have now.
But the New Deal was important in other ways. It wasn't just about the unemployment rate. It was, quite literally, a change in the social contract. I believe FDR saved US capitalism... the irony being, of course, that US capitalists mostly hate his guts. Heh. In the 30s, we could easily have succumbed to far worse (communism, fascism, somethingelsereallybadism...). His compromise salvaged the system that was teetering on the brink of collapse.
If you want to go back to the Gilded Age, I'm sorry. Most of us don't.
I don't see how increasing the marginal rate from 35% to 39.6% (via simply letting a stupid cut expire) and removing some deductions = radical. It's not. A cursory review of history would show you that we've been far more "socialist" in the past. Oh noes!
As Ross Douthat of The Atlantic pointed out today, Obama's plan seems to be the exact opposite of the "starve the beast" theory. Basically, have so much new social spending and social programs that you will be forced to raise taxes on everyone in order to pay for them to have some semblance of a balanced budget (which was something that Matt Yglesias of Think Progress, no right winger, agreed with).
I mean its incredibly foolish to believe that simply raising the top marginal rate from 35% to 40% is going to pay for everything, especially when the budget (coming AFTER the stimulus) increases government spending by ~10%. And to those who think that all this government spending will be reversed when the crisis is over,

If anything, we're just starting to turn up the heat.
Is Obama another Bush or a socialist?
But keep attacking Obama. It's working great!

"Capitalism ho!"
TMM is also a devoted Rush follower. I'm very glad he bit.

I love how Republicans always try to blame the other side when ever they do something wrong. Get some integrity and man up. Take responsibility for your actions for once.
What did Rush say that was out of line?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Ok, fair enough. I was addressing the whining about the marginal tax rate increase/deduction changes. I have not yet addressed the "generational theft" argument.
I have to run. I'll leave with this:
The second argument holds more water. This will increase our debt, and I hate debt. There are things, however, I hate more. And I'm willing to pay my share in the future.
You don't seem left-wing enough to approve of Obama's budget if you actually understand what impact it will have. Thankfully I don't think you understand, based on Imran's later comments.
When it was pointed out to him that if Obama failed, so would the American economy, he said, he hoped Obama would fail but that the American economy wouldn't. WFT does THAT mean???
Why is hoping a political philosophy of your opponent fails that bad?
Did liberals really hope that Bush would succeed in his conservative plans?
