Great news, Elok.
There can be a great deal of satisfaction, joy - even happiness to be had from working in a position that's very down-to-earth and, in certain ways, not very complex. Also, you'll likely find that the people you'll be working with are very easy to be around and befriend compared to the ones you'll typically find in the mid-to-higher echelons of the traditional academic or business world.
I wish you all the best. Take one day at a time, I'm sure with a little effort you'll find that this new line of work - however unfamiliar - could actually suit you very nicely.
Oh, one last thing, you can still revel all you wish in your cultural and otherwise intellectual interests in your free time. There's no real need to strive for intellectual fulfilment in one's professional life. It is easily made up for after the last punch of the clock.

Well, it involves having a brother join the army and realize he doesn't have time anymore to play all those old video games, while simultaneously switching over to downloading movies to his computer. See, this is God's sense of humor at work: He gives me a spectacular number of ways to kill time about two hours before He takes away all my previously limitless free time. I go to TIPS class (something to do with selling liquor) tomorrow morning, then the rest of the week in training, and Red Brick Pizza in Ridgely opens next Wednesday. Not that I'm complaining. Not at all. I will be saving up whatever I can skim from my measly paycheck to buy an engagement ring.Originally posted by David Floyd View PostPlease, teach me the way.

My novel's almost done too, which leaves only the trifling matter of selling it to a publisher and then getting a respectable number of people to buy it during a recession.
As you can probably guess, I am in a remarkably happy and mellow mood. Thanks to all of you for your congratulations, and I hope any of you who are still looking hang in there till something comes your way. You too can be an Ambassador.
And DF, for an electronics-swindling, woman-disrespecting SOB, you're an all right kind of guy, you know that? You take all this hassling in stride...damn, I'm drunk on good will...

How are you doing, jobwise? Did you get a job with the census bureau? I took the test, got all but one question right (I have no idea how I got one wrong), and never heard from them again.Originally posted by SlowwHand View PostExcellent. Something always beats nothing. You're not going down this path without reason. It's just unknown to you at this time.
Re: engagement, I've been planning to get married for some time. My GF, being a sensible lady, insisted that I get some sort of employment first. Luckily she despises diamonds; I'm planning on a silver ring with an emerald, a sapphire and a topaz. It's all symbolic and tied up with the color of our names according to her synesthesia. It should cost under $500.

Good luck Elok, and congrats!

You should have graduated with a real degree, like History and not some piece of fluff like English. Who even needs to know how to write these days?

...but if you can still spell "buoyant" correctly, you need more margaritas.
