  • @ Ramo: I've already said that there were numerous issues (competence, dubious financial ties, etc) with his guy that contributed to this guy's downfall and I've even gone to the trouble of pointing a few of them out. I don't think its possible for any fair minded person to pick one issue out of the horrid mess and say that was the one to do him in.

    • Last I checked, you don't have a vote in the Senate. I'm not sure why your opinion as to his faults is supposed to matter.

I'm sorry. I seem to have forgotten something important. Perhaps you could refresh my memory, what's the purpose of an internet discussion forum again? If it isn't discussion and instead to generate circle jerks, I apoligize and will let you and Arrian continue.

I'd also like to point out that Schumer isn't on any of the relevent committees that would have had anything to do with this nomination.

        • Just did a Google News search.

"Charles Freeman" Israel China: 229 hits
"Charles Freeman" China: 251 hits (+9.6%)
"Charles Freeman" Israel: 350 hits (+52.8%)

I think that pretty much tells the tale.

It is not to confuse two entirely different questions (what's wrong with Freeman/why is the nomination dead). People like Schumer killed the nomination. You didn't. Your opinion (or mine or Arrian's) was completely irrelevant in the process.

            • What's wrong with this nomination is why it is dead otherwise it would have been confirmed.

No. There's a full vote in the Senate. Schumer is widely considered to be one of the most powerful Senators, having engineered the current D majority as the head of the DSCC for two cycles, currently the third ranking D (as Vice-Chair of the Caucus), and is a likely successor to Reid (Durbin would probably have to wait at least until Obama's out of office). His opinion matters a hell of a lot.

                  • This is a really odd arguement. Unless one accepts the limitation held by Mr. Freeman placed upon discussion as to why his nomination failed, your opinion is irrelevent unless you happen to be in a position of power. I don't really accept the premise of the arguement but find it hard to argue against someone that is simply going to shove his fingers in his ears and shout I can't hear you so I'll leave it at that. Other than to say that I find it hard to believe that all things being equal and if this was the only issue with the nomination he wouldn't have been confirmed.

                    • Your argument relies on completely ignoring what powerful pols like Schumer - the guys who actually controlled his fate - have publicly stated. I'm not the one shoving my fingers in my ears.
