  • Well, stop the presses! Coach K disagrees, and clearly there is evidence that Obama is spending more time on the brackets than on the 'conomy.

Talk about someone with a fascinating worldview, Master Drake. Rock!

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

              • I didn't even bother to post that. "Obama nominates tax cheat" is the equivalent of "dog bites man" at this point.

                • Doesn't it start to be emblematic of a larger competence narrative at this point?

                    • What is illustrates for me, besides raising the competance issue wrt to the vetting process, is just how many tax cheats there are. I mean, am I the only one who actually pays my friggin' taxes?

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Given the shear number of times this has happened by now, I think we're well beyond simply accusing only the vetters of incompetence don't you?

Why do you think the Dems are so keen on raising them? They obviously don't pay them.

                        • When both the Republican nominee and his choice for Vice-President were forced to pay back taxes after facing public scrutiny (and one of them ignored her obligations until well after the election), how do you suppose we should extrapolate that to the rest of the party?

With her spearheading the analysis of tax returns for the committee, Obama’s nominees have come under unprecedented scrutiny, asserted a tax expert who worked in the executive branch before entering private practice.

“The Finance Committee has gone a bit overboard, and I find it a little striking that a Democratic committee is doing this to a Democratic administration,” said the expert, who did not want to be identified questioning the powerful committee.

“This has been a lot more in depth and detailed to the point of being silly,” said the expert, pointing to the committee’s review of Kirk’s deduction of $17,382 worth of basketball tickets as business-related expenses.

The committee staff asked Kirk to prove that the tickets “were ordinary and necessary business expenses used to entertain clients,” according to its report, which says he was able to corroborate only $9,900 worth of the tickets. As a result, Kirk told the committee he would pay an extra $2,600 in taxes.

Requiring proof of travel and entertainment expenses “is a standard thing that IRS auditors ask about when they do an audit, but I’ve never seen it with a political appointee,” the expert said.

“That’s not vetting. That’s an audit,” said the expert, pointing out that a majority of audits find errors.

The White House helped create the environment in which even minor financial issues can seriously damage a nominee, asserted Stan Brand, a top Washington lawyer who has helped nominees through the vetting process.

“Part of it is the administration’s fault — they made litmus tests for this stuff when they came in with their new ethical restraints,” he said. “And the committee followed suit. It has to protect itself so it doesn’t put forward somebody’s who’s got quote ‘tax issues.’ It’s a new level and some of it, to me, borders on trivial.”

                          • Seriously, your posts might've had an ounce of credibility if y'all said one word about McCain or Palin's tax issues during the election.

Geithner's pushing a bull**** plan designed almost exclusively around avoiding having to go back to Congress for more money, and this is what y'all choose to criticize?

I can't walk and chew gum at the same time? I'm just curious if this is a requirement for HHS secretary in the Hopenchange era. However, you'll note that I've been for Geithner being thrown under the bus since his nomination.
