Look at the data. The deficits during FY 1930-32 (ignoring '29 since the pre-Depression years aren't comparable - but that was a surplus as well) were much smaller than those run for the four years later (in '37, FDR tried to run something closer to a balanced budget, leading to the "Roosevelt Depression"). In 1930, Hoover actually ran a surplus that was about half as large as his only significant deficit.
He's talking about the Democrats railing against a Republican for tax and spend and leading the country to socialism.

I don't understand the outrage in this thread.

Anyone who is successful and wealthy is pretty much a tax cheat by definition...

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Easy now, finding qualified people might be above his pay grade.

It's hard to find qualified people and who can meet Obama's high ethical standards. Bush got around this problem by ignoring qualifications and ethics and just hired cronies who were loyal to him.

Gee it seems Obama is ignoring qualifications also if he's actually vetting these people first. And if he's not vetting them the I would say he's ignoring his own rules. SO either way, he's not the saint you guys keep trying to say he is.

Indeed. I found it particularly surreal that FDR was doing the criticizing, considering he would later become the paragon of tax and spend liberalism. Ramo was obviously too busy trying to pick a pointless fight to notice, however.

                      • Yeah, FDR is a perfect example of a politician saying whatever to get elected, and then governing in a completely different manner.

                        I'm glad he did, though.

Obama truly is the second coming of FDR.

                          • Fiscal conservatism was the economic consensus in the day, so FDR went along with that line. His campaign was pretty substance free, with the exception of the Oglethorpe commencement address:
The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it: If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

The first thing he did in office, in fact, was cutting services. Then came the New Deal, etc.

And Garner was always a right wing nutjob. That's why he was kicked off the ticket.
"Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before. He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. "
