  • Computer troubles

I am having computer troubles, and I was hoping someone here on Poly can help me.

Three years ago, I bought a Compaq Presario notebook 2200, which I have kept as a backup.

I replaced the motherboard in may, and the notebook has been working just fine since then.

Yesterday, the fan stopped working so I replaced the fan.

Now the laptop is freezing up after startup but the fan is working.

I've tried a variety of things but I'm stumped. Any advice ye polytubbies? I'd like to get it back working again.

    Have you tried prayer?

Perhaps God doesn't want it to be fixed what with all that porn on the internet.

            What's your chipset? (Intel 915?965?)

Have you tried to force the processor to be kept at low speed?

Are you able to monitor the temp?

Edit: Does it freeze in Windows? Or directly after start up?

And go against God? I think not.

                    Not sure.

I've never done that before. It's not overclocked or anything.

Are you able to monitor the temp?
The temperature seems to be fine. It was left to cool all day today, and the problems remain, so I don't believe it's heat which is still responsible for the problems.

Edit: Does it freeze in Windows? Or directly after start up?
It doesn't always freeze up at the same time. It freezes up just prior to when the icons load in windows. When run in safe mode it freezes as well.

I've tried to go into the bios and it will freeze, after trying to do the 3 part hd scan.

Even if you put your laptop in a fridge for a day long, if you didn't put thermal paste or your cooler and fan are badly attached to the processor, it could freeze, after some seconds.

Freezing in different places could be bad memory.

Is it possible that prior overheating could have damaged the memory?

Never heard of thermal paste before. That's a new one to me.

Is the new fan built to the same specs as the original? If it started freezing up only after you replaced the fan, it seems pretty clear that's where the problem lies.

Mind you, I know squat about computer mechanics.
