The people you know don't represent the whole population. You should know that.

Personally, people like me would never go to war, and we don't believe in violence as a solution obviously. That's why we have that opinion.
You can be idealistic all day, every day; but not all people have the same ideals. You say the American objectives are flawed, and yet we never have conquored and occupied and held. WWII, which Che distains, is a prime example.
We let Japan up easy, just have no military, and we guarded their interests for them, in spit of being sucker punched by them to the max. Ditto Germany. Ditto Iraq, twice. We could be occupying Iraq now, if we played by the same rules as Mideastern radicals, but we don't. W ehave ideals. Ideals you deny exist. "Never go to war" is a good path to slavery.
It's said to turn the other cheek, but nothing is said about turning the other cheek repeatedly.

I don't think Che was saying that they are, although I can't remember what his initial point was exactly. Asher made a stupid thread title.

      • Veterans didn't choose. Veterans do what they're told, trusting that the people above them have information warranting the action.

Based on my personal experience, whether they are a vet has no real influence on their belief. The war just seems to reinforce whatever value they alreay had prior to the war experience.

              bootcamp is overrated.

anyone with tiny bit of endurance, patience and willingness to bend over for unfair treatment can pass the basic training. system is designed to weed out quitters not select superhuman athletes.

unless you are severely physically unfit.

Correct, except unfair treatment part, nothing unfair about training a recruit, in most cases

and the "older school" you are, the more was available for options, like 60's and 70's..in reinforcing training to its recruit class

But, Boot Camp is as you described, as long as your physically fit,it is a lot emotional-mind games, or was back in mid 70's. They try to break you down to be built up military strong.

Afterall, we are speaking of undisciplined adolescence, not really having a compass pointing them in a certain direction, the military will help refine what you already have in side.

I remember how proud I felt, Expert marksman at 300 yds with M-16, passing NBC course, being able to take apart, clean and reassemble with eyes shut the old .45 sidearm (during my MP training (OSUT)

I remember having to learn so much, basic building blocks for my military time which help formulate many later traits.

I often wonder when people cut the military down, if they truly know what they are talking about, seriously.

The time I spent was formulated around serving USA, not serving self.

Brotherhood, memories guys, from Military Police

This thread brought back many memories, from my days, active and prior to that the scourge that was Vietnam, which tried to divide a country

It's because of this kind of attitude that I'm against war. You've made my point better than I have myself.

I would expect to convince you that the Bible is just a clumsy story. It's no suprise to me that you believe the same way Slowwhand and GT do on this issue as well.

                          • I don't know that I do, unless by "believe the same way" you mean, "don't believe the same thing I do" or "have a sense for what's crass and try to avoid it." Also, Rage Against The Machine sucks. You could at least quote American Idiot and regurgitate more recent and catchier antiwar hipster tunes...

You didn't claim to have personally defended the rights of anyone (and you have, undoubtedly, far more right to do so than Kid). I certainly believe that those who fight for the rights of others in ANY way should be honored. However, sometimes that way needs to be violent, due to the violence of others. If we lived in a perfect world this wouldn't be true, but so long as someone else has a gun, we need to do so as well.
We don't know what Kid has or hasn't done. As in the "debate" with BK over what right I had to use Helen Keller's image, it may have come as a surprise all of the work I had done around accessibility. Generally, I only loudly talk about the stupid **** I do, not the good things I do. I don't do good works for praise and recognition, and people might be able to learn from my boneheaded mistakes. That Kid doesn't talk about any work he may or may not do doesn't mean he isn't doing it. Whatever else you may call him, I don't think self-laudatory is one of them.
