Some say Obama is the president, we need to support him. Some say he's our president and we need to try and support him, but a civil war of sorts is coming.

Just to play devil's advocate, wasn't the military solidly pro-McCain (and thus pro-let's-continue-the-war-in-Iraq)? I know my brother in the Army hates Obama, but then he's a satellite tech or something, and he's never been in battle.
This would be an inaccurate simplification of military voting patterns.

The question comes down to war as state-sponsored violence. Are you ever in favor of this? Is there any cause, other than defense of the territory of the homeland, in which you favor war?
No. The reason is that I distrust the government and authority. For example, I believe they try to make us believe that the reasons for war and the war itself is different than it actually is. I think its a big ****ing mind game. Furthermore, I would just never kill anyone. In fact, I would never allow myself to be trained to.
If yes, then the hyper-awareness warns you which things can be achieved within "reasonable parameters," whatever those are, and those in which we will be pouring money and men down a rathole as long as the public permits it. Betcha vets get that right more often than "chickenhawks."
Sure. However, I think that some vets will be the type to trust the military too much, which will affect their thinking sometimes. Also, they will tend to believe in violence as a solution more than the general public.

I think veterans tend to believe in violence as a solution far less than the general public... at least veterans of real wars, anyhow. You don't know many veterans, do you?

My neighbor when I was growing is a Viet Nam vet. He believed in Viet Nam. I've known a few veteren's though out the years.
The people you know don't represent the whole population. You should know that.
Personally, people like me would never go to war, and we don't believe in violence as a solution obviously. That's why we have that opinion.

And your small sample size is somehow better than my small sample size? (And mine is probably significantly bigger than yours, i'd suggest, as I lived in a military town and have several veterans in my family...) Further, do some reading on veterans... as a group, they generally are against war, except for what they consider 'good reasons', which tend to be more limiting than the average person's (tending towards simply defense of the homeland).

Note that "the military" said we should use a lot more troops to invade Iraq, to reduce looting and to properly disarm the Iraqi military. The weapons not collected, with supplements, sustained 4 years of insurgency; the looting did far more damage than the war. Sometimes the people who know what to do get ignored by the people in charge who then don't know what went wrong later.
Pacificism is a valid choice, with or without limits. This doesn't make veterans evil for having chosen differently.
