In the UK remembrance day does not and never has glorified war, its purpose is to remember those who have died or have to go though the horrors of war.
Certain people here may when they were 16-18 have had the courage of their no doubt well intentioned convictions to refuse to participate in a war. Most who were called up did what they were told and were marked forever by the experiance.
Even if WW1 was entirley the UK's fault then it is still not wrong to remember the people who fought and died.
In the UK entire factories or districts of cities were put in the same battalions -so called pals battalions- when 75% of them were killed or injured for example on the Somme can you even begin to imagine the damage this does to the survivors and their communities.
Yes there are other horrors in the world and these should be remembered and steps should be taken to remedy no end of things going in the world, that does not mean we should not pay respect to those who for whatever reason where obliged to fight for their countries.
for 364 days a year feel free to call all those who fought warmongering puppets of the imperalists, but for just one day is not ok to just think about them and those who did not come back.
Agreed. I actually once was in London during RD. I didnt know it was RD, but i quickly realised. It felt like being in the wrong place at the wrong time (being german), but then again, we should remember together, shouldnt we ? And after all - my grandpa somehow met my grandma (from wales) during WWI - or somesuch i have been told.

Other than a few idiots, ithink most people would respect any german who wore a poppy and took part in the silence.
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

There are really only five wars that I believe come close to being heroic for one side:
American revolutionaries in American Revolutionary War
Americans in War of 1812
Union in American Civil War
Allies in World War I (although I actually have some sympathy for Germany with this war)
Allies in World War II (without question; the barbarism of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan had to be stopped; but what about colonies of European Allies who wanted their own independence?)
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
By five wars, you mean five wars in American history, right? I'm fairly sure I could find a few hundred wars that were 'heroic' for one side or the other pre-US...
And how exactly was the War of 1812 'heroic'? We started that one ourselves due to a desire to conquer Canada, for god's sake, hoping to take advantage of the British preoccupation with that Napoleon chap...

British ships were violating the rights of American merchant ships. British forces refused to withdraw from northwestern American territory as was drawn up by Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War.
And the two World Wars obviously are not purely of American history.
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
See this is what I was talking about when I said that people believe that the intentions of war are heroic (as in saving the jews from the holocaust and such).
