And **** you, Ontario, for not making it a holiday.

But thank you to our veterans in the Commonwealth.

    Veterans

Both of my grandfathers and (I believe) all 4 of my great-grandfathers were veterans.

In WWII my paternal grandfather was an aircraft mechanic in the UK, and then in northern France.

My maternal grandfather volunteered when war broke out in 1939 (which was very unusual for French Canadians in Quebec). He served as a rifleman, then as a staff car driver to a colonel (who later became a general) in Italy. When the fighting cooled off there he served as a guard on a ship shuttling Axis POWs around.

My maternal grandfather served in the Navy on a small Canadian carrier (HMCS Bonaventure).

My paternal grandfather served in the Royal Canadian Army Corps of Engineers. He "met" the Queen during an inspection.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amidst the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
        In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with we who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
        In Flanders fields.

        — Lt.-Col. John McCrae

Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

My father spent WWII dodging torpedos in the Atlantic, shooting up friendly cruisers with AA guns (once, at which point said AA gun was removed), and hoping the Stukas didn't hit anything that would go boom when they were beached at Sword (or was it Gold?).

He too, has a very high opinion of the Canadians as allies.

The amount of people I saw who didn't observe the silence today pi**ed me off
Learn to overcome the crass demands of flesh and bone, for they warp the matrix through which we perceive the world. Extend your awareness outward, beyond the self of body, to embrace the self of group and the self of humanity. The goals of the group and the greater race are transcendant, and to embrace them is to acheive enlightenment.

If there were no vets, there would necessarily have been no wars.

Not really. The poem is dedicated to evil. Rather than opposing war, it asks for people to join in the struggle (and make the world safe for British imperialism).
