You can't confirm that illegal aliens aren't felons. The American immigration system is a piece of **** and desperately needs an overhaul.

I don't have a problem with enforcing laws. But I'm suspicious of people who get really worked up about illegals. I have the feeling that many of them are just against immigration.

A lot of them are xenophobic. I don't deny it. However, a lot of them aren't (myself included) and I really don't like it when people like McCain call everyone who disagrees with comprehensive immigration reform a racist. It's not true. There are perfectly legitimate reasons for preferring an overhauled legal immigration structure to an amnesty that will massively incentivize future illegal immigration, particularly in the absence of any effective border controls.

However, that is not the whole picture. There are probably more homophobic McCain voters than homophobic Democrat voters. Those bigoted new laws in Florida, Arkansas, Arizona, and California did not pass soley on backs of bigoted Democrats - plenty of Republicans helped make this happen too.

And by the way, let's not forget that none of my disappointment with this is directed toward Obama himself. He has spoken out against Proposition 8 in California, has said he will repeal Defense of Marriage Act, and also wants to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" in the military. AND he supports making legal protection of civil unions for gay couples as federal law (and I personally believe that he privately supports full-fledged equal marriage protection).
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.

I'm not accusing you, and I try to avoid making overbroad statements. But at least from what I've seen the strong majority of (vocal) anti-illegal folks are at least a bit ugly in some of their reasoning.

Are you disappointed in the racist gays who refused to vote for Obama? He got 11% less gay support in this election than Kerry did in 2004...

edit: Obama only lost 7% of Kerry's share of the gay vote. My bad.

Man, Obama did worse among Gays, then McCain did among republicans.

I think immigration reform is necessary. I'd like to see some of the barriers with legal immigration come down, but that doesn't mean illegal immigration should be tolerated.

Well, I thought that gays were more supportive of the second amendment than straight people and Obama's greater support of gun control might be a factor.

Racism cannot be the sole explanation among white gay men. There are gay Republicans (please don't get me started on them right now) who voted for McCain and there are independent white gay men who probably voted for McCain as well - not out of racism.
