I see that the California high speed rail initiative passed in a close vote. What does this vote mean practically? Is it a done deal?

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I assume it means that you'll be able to escape Cali a lot quicker.

      Wrong

It only means that the State now has the authority to sell bonds in order to fund a high speed rail project linking Northern CA to Southern CA. It is not a done deal because the State has to successfully sell the bonds first. Then, comes all the wrangling over which exact rail projects will get priority. I am fairly sure a noticeable percentage of the funds will be wasted due to political fighting/indecision.

Yes, in about 30 years there will be high speed rail. Also, in Oklahoma there will be sidewalks in 30 years.

Thanks, pchang. Who makes the ultimate decisions about timing, where the line is to run, what type of rail is to be used, who gets the construction and operating contract, what the funding shares will be, etc. The governor?

I'm keeping an open mind about it in some situations, but am fairly skeptical about it in others.

Unfortunately, as currently conceived, the line will not go to the Central Business District of San Francisco. I understand the reasons why it wouldn't, but that's just a limitation of the prospective system.

                    Kinda.

You're thinking of state bonds. The normal institutional buyers weren't buying them. But then the State turned to the private market, and the bonds were snapped up by private investors.

If doesn't seem like much of a limitation to take BART to the high speed rail station.

This thing will be great for the central valley when it's built. Less emissions and higher real estate values.
